Hi All,
Just to let you know If you are having problems locating the mysterious 'sponge' that makes your intermittent wipe work, have a look HERE a step by step guide to sponge replacement.
http://p-six.co.uk/articles/intermittentwipe.php

Ok so now the difficult bit, my intermittent wipey thing has a new sponge and functions correctly, so how come the wipers will not park, and speed 1 is on speed 2 of the switch and speed 2 is on position 1? I think someone has messed with the switch in an attempt to fix the problem in the past!
Cheers
Al

I just stuck some clear double sided tape over the hole - worked fine!

Sounds like (once you sort the wiring) your parking switch as failed - quite common. Replaced one yesterday! (has an old one lying around that worked.)???

Love your website Al, just gets better with all the features, keep up the good work.

If its just a non-return valve, I wonder why they didn't just fit a spring ? then it wouldn't deteriorate.

Richard

Yes it appears to be just a non return valve, whenever I mention things like that to my dad he goes all misty eyed and says "Ahh Rover, always had to do it their way!" I suppose its a bit like those old F1 mercedes cars that continued to use drum brakes when everyone else had moved to disks, simply because they had not thought of it! anyway looking at the pics I have just realised that the actual mechanism was made by trico, and there is a trico factory just down the road from me in Pontypool, they still make wiper bits I wonder if they have any old documentation about the system? If I am feeling brave I might pop in
Cheers

A bit of pipe lagging makes an ideal replacement sponge. It needs to be a closed cell sponge otherwise it would absorb water.
Did the late P6's have an electronic instead of a vacuum system ?
Maplins sell a kit to make a delay module which should replace the vacuum system. I might try one and report back

the MGOC do a fancy variable speed kit as well as a fully assembled module. I made a maplin one some years back but was not impressed - its intermitent operation was err to intermitent - like it did not work as it was supposed to

Can't think of anything I would want to improve on the standard system anyway, assuming its working of course, two speeds and variable delay intermittent, I bet there are still some new cars made that don't have that much functionality.

Richard

Wouldn't you like wipers that start automatically when the screen is wet ? And headlights that turn on when it's dark ?
I thought I would but the wipers sometimes wipe too fast and the headlamps come on when you go thro' an underpass
But maybe that's just French electrics on my Peugeot 406
The Rovers electrics are far more reliable !

No thanks !, I know when its raining - the screen gets wet !, the wiper switch is a few inches from the steering wheel, hardly an effort ! And at what point does it turn them on ? all depends on the rate at which they hit the screen, and the size of the drops, and the prevailing conditions light / dark etc... And what mood I'm in !, computer will just see rain and switch them on....

Auto lights.. Hmmm I'll think about that one for a while, perhaps a "Lights recommended" warning light on the dash, but after that its up to me to put them on.

Oh and I want to correct my earlier statement about the P6 wipers being everything you need, there is one missing bit and thats a one-shot wipe on a stalk.

Richard

I can't stand wipers that come on automatically with the washers. They always wipe too long & smear the bl**dy screen again.
Bl**dy modern rubbish.

The V8's delay doesn't work so I'll have a look at my sponge. Hope it is that simple & not electrical or something.

My wipers do not return to the their parked position at all - have to time the turning on and off. Like wise when I put them on intermittent they just move across the screen and stop. I'll have a look at replacing the sponge anyway, but what's causing them not to return? Is it as easily fixable as a bit of DIY sponge??

probably the parking switch - look at the wiper motor - where the wires plug in - that is the parking switch, unplug the wires and you should be able to remove the switch by sliding it back wards and forwards gently - buy a new one first and you'll see how it clips on.
