Jacks, Jacking and sills....

My mechanic had mine up on a 4 post yesterday with the arms that go to four points on the frame. I was immediately shocked with this cause I thought I had taught them better. They usually use their drive-on lift with my car.
I was anxious about what the damage would be as I just had the sills repaired as well as having my floors banged down. The sill repairs held solid, but I will ask that this lift not be used again if at all possible.

If a car is solid then it's fine on a two poster with the pads on the floor corners where the strength should be. If not solid then think again :) It's a good test

Yep - bulging floors and collapsed sills here - to be fixed this saturday all being well.

From what i've since learned I now go from the front and rear crossmembers with the jack with a block of wood.. I dont have a proper lift so the problems associated with that luxury havent bothered me so far....

Rich.
The bulging floor thing bothers me. My car has had previous sill repairs done quite tidily by patching them. The cover plates that go around the 4 jacking tubes have all been done, but the passenger footwell is bulging upwards slightly. I thought this was due to someone jacking it incorrectly, or from hitting something;the floor looks more like its dented, and there are marks in the underseal there. Bit worried now... :?

If it's just where it's been wrongly jacked then i think it's just a case of banging it out and repainting the underside? Doesnt necessarily mean theres anything wrong with the sills... Unless you can see an actual problem?

Here's a pic..

The rust around the jacking point is where I previously removed the underseal a few months ago. It's quite solid. The dented area is circled... Sorry its not a very good pic, I only took it 5 mins ago!

That's nothing compared to what's on mine! I'd try standing on the dented bit see if you can push it down from the inside?

I'm digging those bright red brakes!
Isn't using a two poster lift with the four lifting pads okay then? My project is up on one at the moment, supported a bit further back than the rear crossmember, under the sills below the jacking points, and similarly positioned at the front. The sills are all solid, having been repaired properly. There's no interior, glass, doors or body panels on it, so it weighs less than an P6 usually does in this state. Haven't noticed any deformation of the sills though.

I think your's is OK because as you say the sills are 100% solid... The problem is they arent always... The sills on PAE certainly weren't...

Just a point.

But I've never liked leaving a cars suspension hanging for too long without support,It can put a strain on bits that dont like it.

Cool. I'm gonna strip off all the old underseal, and clean & paint it, then re-underseal. All after bashing the floor back down of course. The red brakes were from Biggred. Wasn't too sure whether red was going to be ok or not. I did try to rebuild my own calipers, but the bleed nipple sheared off on the first one, so I got windy & stumped up for my set to be rebuilt. Luckily I had a spare, so got them rebuilt by Biggred. But thats another story.
