Hi Mark & Welcome. My 2200TC gear lever rattles a bit too. I have been meaning to fix it for last 4 years! Mine never jumps out of gear and apart from sometimes having a little difficulty selecting reverse, it just an annoyance rather than something that needs fixing. I have a long elastic band which connects my gear lever to the metal handle seat adjustment bar under the driver's seat and I find this puts just enough tension on the gerastick to stop the rattle. The rattly gear stick is a common problem and often is down to worn bushes on the gear selection linkage. I'm sure some of our tech experts on here will help if you want to tackle fixing it.

If it's a reasonably high-pitched rattle the problem is likely to be loosening of the 3 bolts that fix the lever into the gearbox extension. Very easy to tighten...once you've removed the transmission tunnel cover without damaging the handbrake gaitor :D

Thanks Phil. Sounds like that's worth looking at as a possible quick fix for me and Mark. If it's not that and the problem is with the bushes, I think I read somewhere that gearbox removal or even engine removal is required to replace bushes on the remote selector linkage.

I don't think so! Although the box does have to be dropped down and it is a bit of a stretch over the top to remove the nuts holding the remote to the gearbox.

You need long thin hands and fingers I think you said after I pulled out the gearbox on mine to replace the selector finger and bushes

Congrats on 4000ish posts by the way :D

would be nice to meet you

Hi Mark,

Your car looks great, same model and colour as mine, same interior too! Now I know what mine's going to look like when I finally get it repainted. As well as the late P6s getting the SD1 colours, they also got the SD1 paint process which wasn't quite perfected. The paint just flakes off  I think most were repainted under warranty, but mine must have been missed. Someone more in the know will probably be able to confirm, but as a TC, shouldn't your car have front overriders as standard? Easy to add if it should.

Here's a pic of my car, mines lots of different shades of Brazillia

Mine looks much better in the Pics than close up needs a re paint realy as to the over riders I have no idea if they should be fitted as standard ( bit of a P6 noobie ) but i am sure someone on here will know as between them the people on here probably know more than Rover did

Mark, I think that overriders were an official Rover optional extra on all P6s.

Mine has overriders front and rear. Although, I prefer the "clean" bumper look without them, I have always been reluctant to remove them as they do serve a useful purpose in terms of protecting your nice chrome bumbers from very minor bumps and scrapes.

It would be interesting to know what a P6 optional extras lists looked like. Does anyone on here have a copy?

My parts book lists front and rear overriders as parts for the TC. Front underriders and their associated mountings are listed for SC and auto.

This presumably just represents what's standard fit. Also, the book was published in 1974, so things could have changed by the time our cars were built.

quite right. SC's and Auto's were over-rider-less throughout production. TC's had over-riders from the launch of the S2 and V8's had them throughout. But many SC's and Auto's acquired them later and there is rumoured to have been an upgrade pack available for them in later years. The give away is always that they have both over-riders and the vestigal under-riders either side of the front numberplate.

Ive decided this winter GZ1677 is going to be warm dry and snuggly
I stole it off Trademe
Hung a couple of ali bars from the garage roof so when I take her out for a journt , I wont get the plastic dragging over the roof and the whole operation becomes a one man job
Pleased with the outcome so far
It also stops me putting junk on the bonnet and roof over winter .
Will stop items falling or brushing against the body work too
Got to keep that ALMOND colour in top order
