Leaking rear caliper

The rear caliper on my P6 1976 3500 is leaking where the handbrake turn lever is entering the caliper.
I can see in my workshop manual that there is a seal that might be the cause.
But is this the only seal i nead to change? ( there seems to be a build up of brake fluid in the large chamber )
Any advice??

That's where the fluid that leaks past the main seal escapes from .I'm afraid you need a caliper overhaul kit if the bore is OK or a recon caliper

I seem to remember that Harvey has said that if rear calipers are done right they are not a problem subsequently... But for my money the solution is to change the rear brake set up complete, either the Classeparts solution (choice of vented or solid discs with a modern caliper, either Sierra or Audi), or do the complete diff and brakes from a Jag as per Simon's recent threads.

If they are stainless steel sleeved you should only ever have to replace the seal in future, (or rebuild the mechanicals) rather than renew the caliper body. Done in that way you should get a good long time between rebuilds. (Well, that's the theory anyway.................)

Once the cylinders have been sleeved in stainless steel, from my experience you should see pretty close to 100,000 miles between rebuilds. Subsequent rebuilds will involve replacing all the seals. Fitting a new pair of flexible brake hoses at this time is probably not a bad idea either.

In any case, the calipers must be removed from the diff in order to replace all the seals.

Hi Atle,

You'll probably have to take down the caliper assembly to replace that single seal anyway. While you're at, it rather renew all of them internally with a seals kit, which costs less than 20 pounds. It's a fidgety job but my nasty old ones came out right - my MOT/EU inspection mechanic remarked on the good, even brake action three years hence... Replacing old flexi pipes also makes good sense.

PM me if you need a source for a kit.

Lykke til!
