Maxxis tyres

Just been thinking about those cars with a space saver spare wheel - so it can't be illegal to have a Porsche (etc) with a tyre not suitable for over 50miles /50 mph ?

They have to have labels as Ron has described to say its not to be driven over a certain speed I believe...

You never used to be able to have skinny rears and fatter fronts until the spacesavers came out

I have looked high and low and cannot find a definitive answer.

It would seem from Carole Nash that if the insurer agrees then you are covered.

That would seem to me that it would indeed be legal as an insurance company is not going to allow anything illegal surely.

I looked on the VOSA site and a thought occured that it may be an idea to phone the council MOT testing centre to get a view from an examiner that if you turned up for a test with a spec of tyre fittted on your P6 lower than the 'H' rating wether it would pass an MOT. If the answer is yes it would pass then it must be legal to fit the lower rated tyre.

The key seems to be the phrase "Tyres must be suitable for the purpose for which the vehicle is being used".

Typical british law, all fairly vague and open to interpretation. Which is where lawyers
come in when it all goes wrong!

That council guide for taxis is as close as we'll get I think... Unless we can find mot test rules...?

The MOT testers guides are available on VOSA's website. The only relevant advice I could find is:

"A Class 3 or 4 vehicle tyre which appears to be of inadequate size, ply or speed rating for the vehicle or its use is not a reason for rejection. However, the vehicle presenter should be informed."

Class 3 is a three wheeler and class 4 a car.

maxxis used to be cheng shin tyres twenty odd years ago used them on 125cc bikes , theyve changed the name to sound more western and have in the bike market at least improved massively and now produce sports tyres, i wouldnt be surprised if they were one of the worlds largest tyre mfr, i put vredestein on my p4 at about 50 euro a corner, regards rich

I'll post up here when they've had a proper test! With my brake line 'incident' they haven't been driven enough to judge!

I've just bought new Maxxis 195/70/14's and so far they seem to be a very good tyre. I only went for the 195/70 as my local tyre specialist couldn't get hold of a 'H' rated 185/80. The car drives and handles so much better than before but I guess most new tyres would have that effect?

I think cheap, well chosen new tyres are always going to be better than old hard rubber? Mine do seem to handle well in both the dry and wet. Only once when the road was particularly greasy have i made the rear twitch on a roundabout. Seemed completely predictable in that situation too :)

Rich.

just popped round my local friendly alloy wheel repairer and he mentioned that he can get Nexen or Maxxis tyres in for about 50 quid, which seems a lot better than the 76 I've just had to pay to replace a bulgy-sidewalled toyo.

That's a fair bit cheaper than I paid! MIne were 65 quid each for Maxxis MA-P1 in 195/70/14.

Think I've seen that Maxxis are sponsoring a "drifting" championship .
Is that a good sign or bad ?

Yep, the place where I got my tyres were keen to tell me they're a popular drifting tyre :)
