Hi I have just bought a 77 2200 tc and noticed when driving it home, when I changed down the box into second a graunching of second gearweak synchro I thought? if you let the engine revs die down to tickover it wasnt to bad.I am going to change the gearbox oil and renew the clutch fluid as the car hasnt been used very much in 10 years.Would it be worth my while putting some molyslip into the gearbox when I change the oil or is this not reccomended as I don,t want to cause any damage any suggestions very welcome

Hello Gary,
the oil companies say that they spend millions in research to provide the best protection only for someone to mess it up by chicking in a couple of quids worth of unknown mixture.
They have a good point - But, I used Molyslip in a back axle on my first car (Triumph Spitfire Mk II) and it certainly quietened it for many miles, although I still had to change it eventually!
Regards, John.

I've added Molyslip to a tappety old Honda H23 engine (with non-hydralic tappets).

It seemed to quieten things down for a while. I still had to get the tappets done though.

In so far as a gearbox... I'd change the gearbox oil for some new stuff. The only similar thing I had was 'treacle' in a noisy P6 rear-diff... new EP90 sorted out and the whining noises quietened much better than an additive could.

HI THANKS FOR THE ADVICE I CHANGED THE GEARBOX OIL FOR GOOD QUALITY 20/50 AND ALSO HAD A LOOK AT THE GEAR LEVER AS THE CAR HAD PREVIOUSLY HAD A CLUTCH FITTED.THE REVERSE COLLAR WAS OVER TO THE RIGHT AND WHEN I TOOK THE LEVER OUT IT HAD BEEN FITTED WRONGLY ALSO THE PIN HAD,NT BEEN PUSHED HOME AS THE INDENTATION IN THE LEVER WAS,NT LINED UP.ALL BACK TOGETHER AND HEY PRESTO EVERYTHING OKAY,A LEESON IN DONT ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BLACK SIDE OF THINGS CHEERS GARY.

just for info
it is not recomended that any additive is used due to the use of syncro rings (or baulk rings) as they are also known as. They rely on friction to slow the gear hub down to engage and so will not work all that well, with the result that it may crunch when engaging gears.
It`s fine in the diff where no friction devices are used, but should not be used where a limited slip diff is fitted, eg. as fitted to some race cars.
