more gearbox woes!

see my earlier posts. Last weekend I got my hands on a decent rev counter and decided to do the stall test as per the ws manual.

Transmisson stalled at 1500 rpm (fault/noise very evident at time - was going to take car for wee run to warm transmisson but had virtiually NO drive even in direct gears) so looks like torque convertor is toast.

Then... switch car off and hear what sounds like leaking water running on ground /... transmisson fluid all over the place.... mhhh gingerly started car again.... noise gone and drive in all gears (still not been back out on road)

could this just be crap in the oil? and the stall test blew it out??

I'm not sure what "Knackered" is, but it sounds like it might equate to an expression on this side of the pond which is "lunched"

err well you see... last weekend started up car ,.., no noise ,,, drove around for about 3-4 miles locally - seems fine .... will keep fingers crossed and do other little bits on car for now and keep short runs locally and see what happens, whislt keeping an eye out for another box... a 71 car would have a type 35 yes?

hi,
just a thought, easiest way is to look at it, it could have been changed to a later box as they are a better box. if it is driven by two solid rods from the bottom of the gearlever it is a BW35 if it is a BW65 it will have a single cable from it.

can you not remember? :-D

... I think you sold it to a bloke from milton keynes, Richard.. who had to sell it .... I got it in December its a 1971 in almond with brown vynil roof, Registration escapes me right now someting like DTB 93..J
buying this is why I have not yet phoned you about power steering for a 2000sc auto......

it was ok again this weekend... hopefully I'm going to get time to look and another car this afternoon which may yield spares if its rotten. .. all I know so fas is its almond!

so finally phone Cilve from the tech team at the club. Its ok to play around with the downshift cable.
"replacment" box came from a V8 I broke, after 100 miles or so it was noisy in first and just did not seem right- too many odd things. So last night screwed the cable up a good bit - what a difference! will try backing it off a bit to reduce change up speeds a little but all the strange noises have gone. Next need to get idle spped stable to reduce thunk as we engage warp drive from standstill -- yes warp drive - road test last night in deserted industrial area plant throttle in drive from standstill - this old bus can really shift! ( need to check it is only a 3.5 V8!)
Oh and another Tax exempt V8 Auto with 1 year Mot should arrive next week! (might be selling due to space thou.. pity...2 cars, same age/colour... almond....)
