More waiting... - Rear pads

After failing on the rear hand brake, due to almost non-existent pad material. I decided to let the garage do the work, was quoted 2 hrs labour, I supplied the pads myself. They ran into `problems` yesterday and asked if they could hang onto the car for another day (is there another option?)which I agreed to. Apparently one piston wouldn`t wind in far enough to get the new pad in, seized! Today I get a call that they`ve `dropped` one of the smaller pads, and it broke! Basically a big chunk of the material broke off, but not to worry as they have a set on order and can they keep the car until Monday? I told them I had another set of pads that I could drop off-stupid me, I should`ve let them fit theirs, and keep my genuine Girlings, then refuse to pay for the replacements :p Anyhoo I`ll argue about that on Monday. Just goes to show though eh? Do I get all cynical and think he broke it giving it a whack with a lump hammer, or just take it on the chin? I did ask them to make sure they fit the complete set of pads and not just replace the one that broke. I WILL be checking it when I get it home :D

BUTCHERS!!!
Tell them they must either buy you a new set,or give you £35 discount on the job!!
They should slide in really easily without banging them in!
If it is that tight, they have either not totally released the handbrake, which I stress, ""MUST"" be done!! before winding the piston back,or not turned the piston far enough back! Been there done that!! The first time was a sod,""learning curve""..The next was a piece of piss!!
If they F### it up again,or cant get it to work,I will do them for you!
I was going to offer to,when we went to the show recently, but you had already organised them to do it!
I am on hol from fri next, I am not going anywhere just playing with my toys!!
Keep me up to date with its progress.

I have recently had the rear calipers off and replaced the brake pads and replaced a "cup rear caliper part no 601916" the bit you wind back, why did they call it a cup?

I am surprised that they couldn't wind it back enough. Are you confident that they know what they are doing?

First thing to do it establish that they haven't damage the "cup". The one I had to replace was faulty in that the flat metal piece had fallen off of the cylindrical bit of the cup.

You said that they couldn't wind it back does that mean that they have now? The part of the cup that is mostly exposed can get rusty but sand paper is usually enough to clean it up. If the tab is missing they will not adjust correctly and will be dangerous.

I have attached a couple of photos. It will be hard to see once they have finished the job. Sorry about the poor quality of the picture but you will get the idea.

If the pad is damaged then I would say it is down to them not correctly fitting them in the first place. The rear pads can be awkward if you haven't fitted a set before. I will be fitting a new set to my own car in a couple of weeks time, after you have them a few times they are easy.

When I replaced the "cup" I tried in vain to do it insitu. due to the spring load on the "push rod" it is pushed against the side of the aperture. It was impossible to get the "cup" thread started so ended up removing the whole caliper and sorting it out on the bench.

Also it is worth noting that if the hydraulic piston or the handbrake cam is siezed then the push rod will be extended out. This would prevent the "cup" being wound back.

Fingers crossed that they don't need to remove the caliper.

Colin

"cup" without the flat metal tab

"cup" as it should be.

They said one side wouldn`t wind in far enough to get the new pad in. They used the `seized` word! I suspected this anyway, as the pads that were there had been there a long time and were well past their best, so I`m not surprised, the piston had probably been sat in the same position for Christ knows how long. When I spoke with the guy yesterday, he admitted it was `entirely my fault` and that my original quote of 2 hrs labour will `still be the same`. I`m satisfied with that, if in the end they`ve knackered anything I`ll be on them like a thousand of brick!

That wont happen,I wont let Drew let them! I will go get it with my trailer and fix it myself rather than let them continue to F### things up further!!
