Most essential tool

My Kamasa metric/imperial socket set - bought in 1984 and still going strong. Every car I've ever owned has been worked on using that set and in all that time I've only had to replace one lost 15mm socket and the ratchet itself (I broke it using it as a hammer!). It has been to Spain, Germany and the UAE with me when living overseas - I have has great value for the £20 or so I spent on it. The addition of a breaker bar has also helped when working on Hondas and their ridiculous crank pulley bolts!

favorite tool is my welder because it's fun to use, can stick things together so they won't come apart, involves spark for visual satisfaction, and electricity for technical satisfaction, creates wonderful buzzing noises and noxious very garage repair like fumes, it's great to see a once rusty hunk of car become bright shiny new and sound metal, and can set things on fire, intentionally and sometimes not intentionally, so it's full of surprises, plus I can use my welding helmet to scare the bejeezus out of my daughter at night. How do you top that? Second favorite is my paint gun. The final stage to a job occasionally actually well done!

It also has the advantage of keeping unwanted interruptions at bay when you are obviously busy, women folk keep well away.....peace reigns !

My most essential tool at the moment can be seen in my latest project thread, in the pic below... Can't make it out...? I'll give you a clue, it's bright orange...
