My latest strange noise

As far as I remember there always was a small hole in the slipper on the genuine tensioners, although I can't think of any reason why offhand. Both the cam and ignition timing will be floating about if the tensioner isn't worknig correctly. I'm surprised that for the time it would have taken you didn't drop one big end and one mains cap while you were there, if they were worn you could have ordered them up.

Yes they do have little holes in them, I 'think' the tensioner has the little hole in it to allow a little oil to lubricate the chain. Although im not sure why as there is a lot of oil flying about. Although I belive the tensioner is the same one used in Rovers OHV engines, if so they may have more need of the little hole. As for the 'not pushing that hard' they don't, the oil presure is used to do the hard work, both tensioners have thier own oil feeds. The top one from the small diamiter pipe and the lower one from where it bolds onto the end of the main oil way. The spring is just to keep in in place when you start the engine up.

Does sound like it may have got gunked up and maybe stuck if it is running better and not making the noises now.

Thanks for your replies, I know I should've had a look at the mains whilst in there but there is a method behind my madness (that's my story and I'm sticking to it  ) I've been unemployed for some time now and I had an interview arranged for today and the noise was getting worse and worse, so my thinking was get the noise assessed and sorted first and make sure I get to the interview. I did think about pulling a main to have a look at sizes etc but the lower camchain tensioner plug had to come out for the bolts to feed out from and I got stuck trying to get that lovely component back in :x and as I'm working outside the light started to fail and I wanted to get the thing started to see if I had to arrange alternative transport or not, so now I've done the job once and cleaned up all the threads and everythings nice and greased up it wont be too much of a problem to get the sump off again and check the mains etc at the next oil change, (incidentally I got the job after the interview :D . Now I'll have the money to get it some mains and big ends and a striker lever.)
The tensioner was stuck with a bit of crusty crud, took it to bits and cleaned everything up and reassembled and it moves freely now, oil light goes out slightly quicker but mains are on the list me thinks.
Glad that hole is meant to be there, had a look on a few sites that sell them and couldn't see a clear enough pic to see if they were like it from new so mystery solved there then. I'm now looking into whether to do the camchains aswell when doing the mains. I need to get the SD1 finished so I've got a car to drive then I'll pull the 2000 off the road to sort everything it's accumulated during my low income period. Happy days :D
Thanks everyone.

Well done for getting the job .It's not easy out there .I was made redundant last August and it took 5 months to find a job

Thanks Dave, you're right, it is hard out there but let's hope that things pick up for everyone and we can all spend our hard earned on Rovers.
:D :D :D
