No brakes...

Hi there!
Just spent the day to replace my rear brake pads (Girling calipers)... and found that the rear left wheel was almost not braking! the rear right a little bit more... and almost no handbrake on both.
Checked that everything is ok, pads moving freely, good hoses, pushrods spinning free, and hearing the famous "click click" when braking for the 1st times... tried to bleed the whole system...

My 4 calipers were rebuilt one year ago, so WTF??? :-(

If they were working OK before you fitted the pads the chances are you haven't adjusted them up far enough.

Hi,

It is essential that the triangular cams are set correctly - IIRC they should rest on their stops before the handbrake linkage is connected. It's worth checking.

Also, make sure the pad faces are perfectly even - I had a nearly new set that were a bit scuffed which I filed flat  but this wasn't flat enough - they've got to be perfect or you only get poor contact & brakes.

Look at the simple things first - are the 'shiny' bands on the discs as wide as the pads' height? Ie: are they making a good contact?

Mine were patchy at best, so the pads were a good place to start.

I'm shocked they'd only last a year after a rebuild  I mean the pads aswell as the calipers :|
Do you do much mileage in a year? :)

Typically you should see in the region of 50 to 60,000 miles from a set of rear pads, that is certainly what I have experienced. I replaced my original 1974 rear disks in 2007 after some 210,000 miles.

drcooper,...were your rear pads already down to the wires in just one year? As Grim asked,...how many miles have you done in that time?

Ron.
