been out tonight in my rover and coming back stopped of somewhere for half an hour...when i`ve got back in the dash didnt come on when i switched on the lights...the warning things like indicaters and main beam lights all work...but no back lighting...also all the rear lights went out aswell!!...so just had front lights...i noticed a while ago that the dash dimmer was a bit faulty..dash lights were either on our off and then only if the knob was in a certain place...decided to leave it there!!...any ideas??

Sounds to me like either the sidelight part of the switch has given up or a wire has dropped off the switch, that's assuming you've checked that the fuse hasn't blown

well....just been out to the garage to have a look now its light...and guess what...they all worked fine!!..i didnt think it was fuse related cos so much went out at once...so i guessed the switch too....had a nova years ago that when you pulled out the light switch to turn the interior light on all the outside lights went out...didnt help the first time it happened was midnight driving across the yorkshire moors!..£2 at a scrap yard the next day sorted it..anyway...have just replaced the entire light switch with the one of my spares car so will see how it goes...was thinking about replacing the panel dimmer too...are the two different speedo types interchangable??

Did you mean are the dimmers the same from either style speedo? if so I'm not quite sure from memory Jon but I would think probably they are

Sounds like it's worth stripping the dimmer switch down to clean it but I'd also check the fuse box. A chap was telling me the other day about his lights suddenly going of intermitantly and he traced it to a loose/dirty fuse. Once he'd pinched the terminals together it worked fine.

just a little update, the fuse was the problem, the fourth from the left, how can one bad contact cause the dash lights, rear lights and the n/s sidelight to go out?

here has been quite a lot of discussion on fuses and fuse boxes on here over the years. S1 style with the small fuse box in the engine bay is immune (carries over into early apparently S2 cars) - all these comments apply to the S2 fuse box behind the passenger side shin bin. To summarise there are two particular problems. First is that there is a metric size fuse available which will fit into the fuse holders - BUT it isn't quite long enough and will cause overheating - get the correct imperial size fuses which are still available. The second problem is much more serious and can cause major catastrophe. This fuse box was used in the P5 without any known incident, so it appears the problem is a production fault - perhaps the looms were assembled by a different supplier. The fuse box when used in the P6 is prone to melting / catching fire. This originates from the crimping of the wires into the terminations of the box being inadequate. These then overheat. It is possible to go through an intact box and nip them up to improve the mechanical connection, but once heating has started the box is toast as it deforms very easily and, if it gets to that stage, will burn enthusiastically at a very low temperature. Many people, myself amongst them have replaced the complete box with a modern equivalent.

Mine melted on the way back from Norwich

The fuse which runs the fuel pump got hot and just fell out, leaving me on the side of a busy dual carriageway scrtaching my head and teaching nearby wildlife new words.

It does appear that the spring bit is actually plastic, as the metal terminals are loose fitting. So if it does get hot, the plastic melts and the tension has gone. You cannot just pinch them terminals together to get a better fit.

I will be changing it soon so will be checking the tightness of the wires - anyone soldered them in?

the fuse box on a viva hb is very similer to the p6 and i had the same problem with the fuel pump fuse droping :x out so i replaysed the fuse box with a modon spade fuse box didnt have anymore problems after that :D
