Noise from rear brakes

Just wanted to see if anyone else has ever noticed this happening:

I went for a drive yesterday and noticed when I went round some corners or over bumps that there was a heavy knocking noise coming from the back fearing a loose suspension bolt I drove back home and got it over the pit. Eventually I found that the noise was the rear brake caliper rocking from side to sde on the pivot bolt (as they are supposed to).

It seemed that with brake off the pads are releasing to give quite a lot of clearance to the disc which allows the caliper and pads to rattle around a bit.

I took the back off a caliper (there is a hole cut in the floor of the estate) and watched the adjuster while someone applied the brakes for me. It seems the ratchet in the adjuster wasn't quite catching the next tooth yet. Satisfied that it wasn't anything serious I went back out in it again and sure enough the noise dissapeard after another 20miles with brakes being used hard and I presume they must have adjusted up to the next tooth.

Anyone ever noticed this before? It seems that it must inevitably happen because of the design of the adjuster. The only thing I wondered it whether the caliper pivot bolts shoud hold the calipers more tightly to the axle casing and prevent them wobbling around but I'm pretty sure it all went back together correctly.

Personally speaking I have not had to do any work on the brakes of my P6 (I know its coming to the time I will have to soon) so am unable to say why your brakes are doing this. If it helps though moden day cars have 'sliders' that allow the caliper to move with the disc and the sliders have a machined groove in them in which sits a rubber "o" ring. This helps to hold the caliper when the pads have been released from the disc thus preventing rattles............ perhaps you could look at incoropating something similar to your rear calipers..... Sorry I cant help any further
