Non Starting 3500s

Hello all.
My 3500s has some starting problems. When I turn the key there is a clicking sound in the relay. The car will not start. The starter and soleniod are recently rebuilt. I took it to my machanic, we sent the starter back to where it was rebuilt, and the car started. Went to start this morning and clicking sound, no start. Fiddled with the key and finally started. Dropped kid to school, came home and now will not start at all.
Any ideas would be wonderful. Thank you all in advance, Vim

had a similar fault while playing with my v8 the other day,
turned out to be a dodgy, dirty connection on the relay on the inner wing. seeing as your starter has been recently done,I would check the connectors on the wiring to it for a break or dirt/paint stopping a full connection happening.also check the battery connections are good and solid

The ignition switch turns all the way and activates the relay to the statrter, so I think that it is working.

Tryed all that was suggested. Cleaned all the battery terminals, leads and all the contacts to the starter and relay, but alas still nothing. There is a relay under the dash that has a sticker on it that says Alternator. This clicks loudly, but other than that nothing. Thanks for the help so far.
Anymore help out there.

sounds more like a faulty ign switch if you had to fiddle with the key. try bypassing it to test,if you have a spare switch just plug the spare in and try!!
just got you PM..keep PLUGGING AWAY!!! :p
PS!!! I would pop over to have a look, take a hol at same time as I am resting between jobs.If I take my promised trip to NZ I want to do a few stops on my way so you never know.hopefully you will have it fixed by then :p

Thank you once again. Just had a look at the ign switch. Could not figure out how to remove it. The thing that is throwing me is the fact that the relay is clicking when I turn the key. Would this happen with a faulty ign switch?
Would love for you to visit. If you could be here by tommorrow, I am sure you could get it started.

Perhaps you should try to bypass the solenoid and feed the starter directly from the battery. If this doesn't work and the engine earth strap does what it should do, then you 'll know that the starter is at fault.

Morning vim,
Ive just had a thought :p is your car an automatic,I presume it still is ???
if it is,it could be the inhibitor switch/relay thats at fault.
when you turn the key to start, wiggle the gearlever to see if its a dodgy contact on that :p
on mine,on the relay, the two wires that are for the starter are thick brown for power feed in and thick white and brown to starter solenoid, if you use a length of wire to bridge these 2 the starter should spin over.I remembered that on an old xj6 jag I had if I left it in gear I got a click until I wiggled the g/lever in P or moved it to N :p
worth a wiggle

You 're right. I am thinking inertia starters with a separate solenoid since all my cars had one. Pre-engaged starters are different animals. I am afraid that you may have to remove the starter in this case, but i am not familiar with these so i cannot tell for sure.

Hello all,
Tryed all the suggestions and cleaned all the terminals, got a car to jump start the Rover. Still nothing. Getting frustrated and angery by now. I thought lets hit something really hard. Decided that it would be the solenoid on the starter. Hit it a little harder than last time and yes it started. Joy mixed with anger, as the starter has been back to the shop twice now. tommorrow I will accompany said starter to the shop. Hope the owner knows what a ###### is, that is how I will say good morning.
Thank you to all for your help. Atleast I now have a car that has clean ternimals from front to back. Will be in the UK in July. Anybody close to Southampton.
Be good people, Vim

Hi Vim
Are you going to be in the UK for the July 1st meeting in Derby? or is it a business trip?
Might see you when you come over,I am in Bristol which is 2hrs from Southampton,a good excuse for a drive out on a sunday for a pub lunch :p maybe with others from the local group!!

Hello Dave,
My parents live in Southampton. I was born and raised there. Will coming over with my daughter, as my parents have not seen her for awhile. I will try and take in some meets whilst I am there. Bristol is not that far, so perhaps we can meet up.
I will confirm closer to the time and we will have to try and meet up. Would be great to meest some people from the club.
