OK, there is some going back!

I put yet another 2 litres of ATF in the gearbox today and it does go backwards. There is a great deal of slip and accrid smoke starts to pour from the transmission tunnel after a short while. I can't tell if this is burning fluid or belts or what.

Anyway, I managed to reverse it off the sloping drive and turn it round so that I can easily drive it off the drive in future.

I'm sure one of you must have experienced this sort of problem in the past. HELP!

By the way, can I get the gearbox out without first removing the engine? It's running so sweetly that I don't want to touch it.

Hello,
Yes, you can change the gearbox from underneath without removing the engine (I had to change the auto box on my first 3500 a 1972 model some years ago) but the box is VERY heavy and you need at least 2 persons (better with 3 or 2 and a jack) for the final lift.
Not sure about acrid smoke - Doesn't sound healthy - I'm sure an auto trans expert will reply here soon, or drive it to your local specialist (look in yellow pages)
Regards, John.

Sounds bad. I had an auto that emitted quite a lot of smoke when I managed to get it in 2nd and 3rd at the same time. That was quite definitatly the end of that one! The box had been giving trouble with a noisy pump for weeks before hand so it wasn't a surprise.

I'm not an expert on the auto boxes and although the bands can be adjusted I think once they have been burnt they are shot so your best looking for another box. Will probably be cheaper than repairing in any circumstance.
