The P6 Rover Owners Club National Show took place on Sunday 27th June at the Elsecar Heritage Centre, South Yorkshire.
This central UK venue was chosen because of the variety of interests it has to suit the whole family. From a children’s play centre to antiques and collectables and the old fashioned sweet shop which proved to be an enjoyable day without just being sat in a field without nothing else to see or do. On the same day visitors were also able to enjoy a ride on the resident steam train.
The show was open to all classics and consisted of 36 vehicles on display which included 12 P6 Rovers’. They may not have been as many vehicles as hoped, but as they say “it’s quality not quantity”. Was the low turnout because of the annnouncement on the Wednesday prior to the show, that England was playing Germany in the World Cup on the same afternoon, the fuel costs and the current credit crunch, or maybe the turnout at classic car shows are much fewer these days than in past years?
The ‘P6 Rover of the Show’ and ‘3500 Winner’ was Mr Eric Boardman from Manchester with his immaculate 1972 Mexico Brown P6 Rover.
The ‘2000 Winner’ was Mr B. Hand from Chesterfield with his 1967 Rover P6 and the ‘2200 Winner’ was Mr Tony Ryalls with his 1974 Rover P6.
All of the vehicles at the show were stunning including the youngest vehicle on display which was a 2005 Rover 75 Estate and the oldest a vintage 1939 Daimler DB18-1.
The ‘Best Other Classic Winner’ was a 1969 Ford Capri 1600GT XLR owned by Mr Stuart Turp. The golden Ford Capri has appeared in ITV’s ‘Heartbeat’ in 2003 & 2004, also in the 2004 documentary ‘The Yorkshire Ripper’ and the film ‘The Damned United’ at Leeds Football Club in 2008.
A fantastic day was enjoyed by all who attended and visitors praised the Club on how much they enjoyed the show. A few local members were present who had not yet got there P6 on the road and two visitors drove from Germany who had hired a mobile home to collect some P6 parts from Birmingham and they called to the show to see the wonderful display.
The next P6 Rover Owners Club show will be at the Emley Show, Huddersfield on Saturday 7th August beside the Emley Mast which is the TV mast that you can see for miles around. If you would like to come along with your classic vehicle contact Deborah Squires on 01484 413608 or visit the Club website
