Park lights - What are they supposed to do?

Hi all,
My 2000 TC, as all series 1 cars i believe, came with 2 light switches on the dashboard. One for headlighs/fog lights and another for side lights/park lights.
While the former is reasonable enough, along with sidelights ON position, what does the parklights ON position of the switch sopposed to do?
Needless to say it does nothing on my car.
cheers,

Hi, with the switch in the "up" position it will turn on your parking lights - if rhd the right, if lhd the left, so just the front & rear lights on the respective side will illuminate, all other lights, number plate & the opposite side are off - meant for night parking in unlit or poorly lit roads.

The majority of cars have these, on the later cars it is a combined switch. I think that the youngest cars may not have had them - a BL cost-cutting exercise probably.

If your side lights work ok, then the bulbs are fine (same ones) otherwise it is an electrical fault - suggest you start with the switch & work your way through the circuit.

Good luck.

The law changed regarding the parking of vehicles without lights rendering parking lights obsolete so Rover stopped wiring them in to the cars electrical circuit.

Thanks for the replies,

my side lights work fine, so probably the park light function is not connected at all.

It sounds like the facility in German cars that you can leave the left or right side lights on, with a combination of the direction indicator switch and the lights switch.

"Parking" light on my Rover here in the US followed the US custom, putting on the side lights and the tailights, both sides

The switch I just fitted to our 2200 to cure the dashlights going out has the parklight position which the original didn't. When you switch to it it just has the same effect as the sidelight position.
