Petrol Fountain !

Just been out to start my 2.2TC for the first time this year.....

Started up without too much trouble, but smelt of petrol, I thought it was just because I had the choke out, but even when I pushed it in, the smell was still there, and a lot worse than a normal rich smell.

So I popped the bonnet, and when I opened it I was greated by I lovely petrol fountain, all over the engine.
I quickly stopped the engine, disconnected the battery and fetched the fire extinguisher (just in case, there must have been a gallon of petrol on the floor !).

Turned out the fuel line had split just where it joins the front carb, a quick pull on the fuel pump primer had fuel spraying out.

5 mins, to cut the end off the pipe and re-fit, the rest of the pipe has hardened a bit but seamed ok, but I'll get a new piece next week.

Fired her up again, and all was well. I was half expecting the clutch to have seized but not the case :D

Found a nice rusty hole on the inner wing, so a bit of welding needed before the mot is due in august.

Just need some insurance and tax and she's out for the shows......

Hi All,
I know this is an old thread, but couldn't resist mentioning this has happened to me in the past on two occasions, once in a beetle where the fuel hose split and filled a heat exchanger with petrol, and once In a V6 Capri where the local garage I used to fit the stainless exhaust managed to fit it so that it was touching the plastic fuel pipe - It burned through after about 2 miles, I only noticed it as I had left the car running when I went to close the gate ahh the joys of owning an old car!
