power steering - conversion

Hi Touch wood P6 has been running well lately, so i am starting to look at other ways that I could enjoy the driving experience more as it's my everday driver.

One thing that would be of interest is installing power steering. I assume it can be done as I am sure I have read somewhere about conversion kits. So I was wondering if anybody out there would roughly know what the cost would be and where I could get a conversion done or even buy a good kit.

Thanks again
Paul

I assume you are talking about converting a V8.
I have a complete kit available should this be of interest send me a PM. I also know someone who could fit it. Price for supply and fit would be about £350- 400 I would imagine.

I had a feeling you had a 4 cyl Skilly? If so it's not quite as simple but extremely possible (4cyl cars were never sold with a power steering option). Power steering steering boxes are available new still and idler boxes are reasonably easy to get reconned. Then you use the inter box adjustable track rod from the V8 and Bob is your uncle as far as the steering part goes. Fitting the pump to the engine is now well proven so worth going to someone who's done it before like Ian at Rover-Classics.

Once you've got it fitted you can then uprate your road wheels to the wider V8 ones or go further and fit alloys without tearing your shoulder muscles! (note that wider road wheels on the 4 cyl require you to fit the cranked rear radius arm from the V8 - a 2 minute job unless the boot side comes away in your hands......)

The steering idler is the same as far as I remember. (Apart from the very early ones?)
I have seen the 4cyl PAS conversions and although they obviously do the job the pumps sap even more power from the meagre amount available, and they look exactly like what they are, a conversion, the pump looks stuck on like an afterthought. Try an electrically driven pump to cure both problems.

IIRC Front hubs are different as well if you fit V8 wheels

Hi Thanks for the feedback so far. Chris you are quite right my rover is a 1773 2000 SC. I am located near Glasgow but wouldn't mind travelling a bit (Middlands) to someone who could do a good job for a reasonable price. Is Ian at rover classics within this distance.

Thanks
Skilly
