hello again,

Thinking of fitting power steering to the Rover, she is a 1971 3500 Auto and i wondered if anyone could tell me how much it would cost, where you can buy the kits from and if you can do it yourself?

Thanks

Fitting PAS to a V8 is a bolt on operation apart from drilling the holes to mount the reservoir. The only problems I've come across are the bolts thru the water pump and front cover that need to be removed to fit the pump mounting bracket, have a tendancy to snap.
I have a kit for sale, if you're interested, send me a personal message.

Yes you can do it yourself if you have the time inclination and tools. You need to drill holes in the inner wing for the reservoir and may to find a couple of slighly longer bolts for the bracket for the pump - these go through the bracket and timing cover, so adding the bracket on the outside of the cover makes the existing bolts a fraction short.

One other point to note is that the rear mounting bolts for the pump bracket go into the block, and apparently not all castings have these drilled and tapped to take these. This may only apply to some very early P6B engines.

Give ianp6man a yell if you need parts-I don't promise he has them but he has done a few of these and is definitely one of the good guys in the business.

To my mind the biggest hazard in fitting power steering is actually the windscreen wipers! Your car is likely to have the wiper motor on the drivers side above the current manual steering box, driving the wiper arms with a lever and crank mechanism. Because the power steering box is much larger you need to fit the power steering type wiper mechanism with the wiper motor on the passenger side and a spiral spring in tube type drive to wheelboxes for the wipers. Straightforward but fiddly!

Chris

The wiper motors on the passenger side are not just fitted to the PAS cars but as far as I'm aware all the later models, but I'm not sure of the exact changeover point.

I drove my '75 up to IanP6man in Doncaster (I'm down nearer you BTW). He fitted over a couple of days. Not regretted it, and it was well worth the outlay. PM Ian and he can quote his current price, either supplying the kit or full job fitted.

jay is in the process of fitting pas into his 2000tc and he is using a mini wiper motor and rack bits with a bit of mods and brackets to make it work...he won 2.5 sets off ebay08-Aug for £12.50 item number 150016958967

I managed to get all of the bits from one guy for £90. It was a bolt on job and the car is (even more) lovely to drive with it.

Mine is a 3500s manual
