Queries on timing setting 2000 sc

I've had the carb rebuilt on my '66 2000sc and am going to look at the timing. Never done the timing before so any suggestions / hints / tips all gratefully received. I have a timing gun and in theory, know what to do. Just never done it before.

Main reason for looking at timing is that the book states timing s/b 4 degrees btdc. But I realise that the book was written in a time with different fuel to today's fuel. E10 has just come in to ireland and I have no choice but to use E10 with an octane booster (and lead additive). The guy who rebuilt the carb has suggested I go for around 10 degrees btdc. Does that sound about right? He also suggested changing plugs from N9YC to NGK BP5ES. What are people's thoughts on the 10 degrees and plugs?
