Quick dizzy question??

Just a quickie.

I've seen a little about upgrading to electronic ignition.

Is this a good idea before i buy my new dizzy cap and rotor arm?

Is it just a case of swapping the whole distributer with one from a more modern (EFI) engine?

Cause as it happens i have a little bit of a range rover classic that is going for scrap soon. Should i liberate some of it's parts.

Cheers

Mine is a contactless Rover dizzy from an SD1.

I am sure I fitted one to my old P6, without any modifications, except to the oil pump drive.

IIRC, and its a long time ago, I removed the drive from the old unit and fitted it to the SD1 dizzy.

Certainly made it more reliable.

Best to have them both out and have a look.

when I got my P6B it had a Pertronix (made in USA) "Ignitor, Solid-State Electronic Ignition System" it has a small electronic module which fits where the points go and a rotor (which has magnets imbedded in it) which fits on the dizzy shaft over the lobes, and thats all, the two wires then connect to the coil as normal, and it seems to work ok, "never change points again" the box says, and "can be fitted in the time required to change a set of points" says the box again. My box had Australian Distributors so It should be available in UK, found the following on google. ( I've no association with company or product, just happened to be fitted on my P6)

Pertronix kit is the same as Aldon, but can be ordered & paid for in dollars, here...

Retro Rockets

For the V8 with Lucas 35D8 distributor, the Ignitor number is LU-181 or LU-183, about 2/3 down the page, here...

Pertronix for Lucas apps.

Obviously paying in dollars was a lot more :D a few months ago!

Any bolt-on electronic upgrade will still rely on the existing dizzy being in good shape mechanically (advance weights, springs, bushings, etc). For those with some money to burn, however....something like...

123-ignition

I've not moved away from my standard 35D8 (as yet!)...someday, though!

I went to RPI for my SD1 electronic unit.

They fitted one for £130.00 inc.

I got £128.00 for the old Mallory unit on ebay :D

All good stuff.

I'll fit my new (pattern  ) dizzy cap. And my rotor arm when i get it. Make sure she runs alright, then pull the dizzy and compare to this spare see how it goes from there.

Cheersfor the info,
Chris
