Replacement Alternator Hella/Bosch etc.

Hello fellow Rover drivers,

a chap from our neighbourhood just recently bought a P6 and we want to help him get the car road ready again. First thing he needs urgently is a new alternator. Is there any replacement alternator from the current range of the normal car suppliers (like Bosch or Hella) which fits (connections, amps and especially size and mountings)?

Since we live in germany a german brand is preferred, because they are much easier to get here and a Lucas replacement takes a while to get here.

BTW: The car is a later (around 1974) V8 auto.

Any ideas what to do? Any help is like always appreciated big time....

Hi Olaf,

i have replaced the Lucas 16 ACR alternators in both my cars with the equivalent Bosch alternators. The output is 45 amps but i don't remember any specific part numbers. I' ll try and have a look tomorrow.

wouldnt be too hard to fit the LUCAS A122/A155 type they are pretty common from autin rover and ford models escorts and the likes.

I swapped an AC delco for one and never looked back.

Later Range Rovers have Bosch alterentors and you can get them up to 125A output that bolt straight on to the V8. But you must have the later type of bracket which places the alternator to the side of the cam cover. I'm afraid you'd have to blag the electriccal connections though.

That said, why not repair the one you have? Brush sets, diode packs and slip rings are readily available and listed on Ebay as well.

Hi Chris,

repairing the old one would have been my first choice too. But the car already has a replacement alternator of a different type and questionable quality which is broken. Therefore i would prefer to get a new one....

Hi Chris

do you have a picture or a link to this setup? on another forum in a very very old post, someone mentioned updating to a Ford AU Falcon alternator (over 100A I think). Something like this though sounds a lot easier.

Hi, a couple of years ago I had an 80 amp alternator from a 2 litre Sierra
in the right position in front of the head. Power terminals were on top of
the alternator. Otherwise try scouring scrapyards for likely candidates.
