Rover 75 engines

hey, joking apart we have sold quite few citoren c5's..they scare the bejeezuz outta me but they have a very loyal following and to be honest we havent had one fault with any of them!
(very unlike the awfull lagunas that go "pop" just for fun!)

the last run out 75's had a cheapo pioneer stereo withan awfull car accesory adapter plate in the dash...that must have started alarm bells ringing in the dealers!

modern cars do tend to be lacking in character..im running a 1998 toyota celica (thats quite modern for me!) and it looks great from the outside but its as dull as ditchwater to drive.

I really miss my recently sold mazda mx5..now that was a fun car!

the very last ones didnt even have a spare wheel (not even a space saver!) just a big hole in the boot and a tin of tyre weld!!

This does not have to do with Rover, it is a late trent that other manufacturers like Mazda like to follow.
And it will become more common, no matter we like it or not.

well...most cars now have space savers as the huge modern wheels take up too much boot space..the rover just had a big hole in the boot where the spare used to live.
Im guessing in this case it was a matter of saving money where ever possible!

I wonder what happend to al those part built 75's i remember reading about....

My C5 is going back to the leasing Co. as I will soon be redundant .I was thinking of picking up a cheap 2002 on Laguna but HotRod says they go "pop"
I was thinking of asking if anyone has experience of lateish Lagunas - I know the EGR valves play up on the diesel and the auto boxes aren't too reliable . I have read the 1.8 petrol manual is the best of the bad bunch .Any comments ?

id go for a cheap mondeo diesel with a good history every time over the laguna.
the later ones have this awful electronic handbrake..no one likes it and its a pain when it goes wrong (OFTEN!)
the electric windows are cable operated and break (nasty job to replace)
the remote keycard (car has no keys!) pack up..micro switch comes unsolderd and you cant lock or unlock doors..a fortune from renualt and you have to book car in for new cards coding in.
mechanically..blown turbos..particulate filters are a real problem..the inlet manilfold is PLASTIC and causes allsorts of weird problems! engine managment lights come and go depending on the cars mood and batteries going flat for no apparent reason.
the aircon tends to not work very well despite being re gassed and dealers never seem to change the pollen filters so air circulation and heat output in the car can be very poor.
AVOID any high spec models..the poverty spec ones are less likely to cause you problems
the renualt in built sat nav is not worth the price premium as its distractingly small and annoying to use!buy a £99 tom tom from halfrauds instead.
renault keep changing the cam belt intervals too..check if its had/needs a belt..dear job.
(petrol models are worth lots less than diesels and will be harder to sell)
avoid models with tyre pressure sensors too..they are a pain to fix and cost a lot too..you can have the sytem shut off by an auto electrician.
hope this helps ! we only ever sell them because they look very good value compared to other cars..I cringe every time one goes out!
meganes are pretty much the same but have the comedy rear!

I had a Renault something or other as a courtesy car when mine was in the body shop. I tried using the sat nav on two or three occasions but only ever mananged to get it to take me to Aberdeen Airport. Gave up in the end and used the 'stick on the window' one from the P6.

Blimey , the Laguna makes the C5 look reliable .Mine got off to a shaky start in life but when I threatened to stop paying the lease , they sorted it out and it's been very good

I'd better start looking at Ford Mundanos

I can't fault mine really. It's a 2001 mk3 diesel, pre TDCI, so doesn't have the dual mass flywheel and starter motor troubles. It's just rolled past 288k miles, still returns 55-60mpg without using any oil. They do have their problems, like all cars really, just google mondeo problems or something like that. I've replaced one rear wheel bearing, the fuel tank lift pump (expensive) and fitted a new alternator and battery last week, and nothing more in 100k miles / 3 1/2 years. All it gets is an oil and filter change every 5-10k miles.

Simon

288 k miles - amazing ! My C5 only gets new oil every 20K miles according to the servicing schedule , must be a trade off of servicing costs against engine life

Do Mondeos have particulate filters and EOLYS fluid injected into the filter to burn off the deposits ?

i'd say the mundano is about the best value if you gotta have a modern car..I prefer them for a company runabout as they all seem to do over 47mpg (diesels !)
dont be fooled into paying silly money by over enthusiatic dealers..buy from a direct source or place that sells ex lease stuff.
as far as im aware your ok for particulate filters right up to the end of production on the last of the old model.
havent a clue about the current version as they still are very hard to find. Im told they are just like the latest focus, but bigger!

**as a diversion..have you considerd a skoda octavia? basically a passat and a very good car for the money! also the jaguar x type is a cheap buy just now and as everyone knows its basically a mondeo with a flashy badge!

MG Rover had a cost cutting program called 'Project Drive' from 2001 onwards which progressively cheapened their products. It started with 'minor' things like decals and wood trim, and by 2005 ended up with the removal of rust/sound proofing and the aforementioned spare wheel.

You can't really blame them though when each day brought them closer to running out of money.

It must be said though, if you want a 25/45/75, etc. , get one as early as possible.

I've just had a mate talking me into looking at Volvo V70's , albeit a bit older , He had a X reg T5 101K miles , cost £2500 and thought it was the dog's doodas

at last something i approve of! you really cant go wrong with v70's !
ok..they cost a bit but its the best diesel for pure sound enjoyment ever!
its a noise just like the 5 pot audi quattros..people never belive there in a diesel car with these things. and very very quick even in automatic.

its just that being a biker...volvo badge just doesnt sit right with me!

Actually, the deletion of the door torpedo badges and change from real wood to printed plastic happened when production was moved from Cowley to Longbridge. Project Drive affected the whole range of cars and included such things as deletion of high tone horn from all but the top of the range cars. To quote "DRIVE is a major project within MG Rover. It’s objective is to significantly improve our competitiveness."

Correct, that's when it started, but they made those changes as a result of cost cutting. It did improve their competitiveness, reducing losses to £77 million in 2003 from £800m in 1999, but at a cost to the quality and reputation of the cars.

I bought a 75 diesel tourer new in 2001 and had it chipped to 135bhp, done 190,000 in it, had a new battery and thats all, apart from tyres pads and discs. Original exhaust, clutch etc etc. found it more economical and more reliable than the two audis I had before it. Still does over 40mpg always, 50 if cruising and extremely comfortable. Owes me nothing.
