SD1 Front cover

I have a front engine cover from an SD1 that I want to fit to my P6, I know that the oil pump/dist drives are different, is it just a simple matter of changing to the earlier oil pump drive?

You're right that the only area that differs is the oil pump drive. You will need to change the drive on the bottom of the distributor to match the SD1 oil pump. I can't remember which way round it is but I think the the P6 has a male end to match the slot in the oil pump drive gear shaft whereas the SD1 type distributor (or landrover etc etc) has a slot in the end. (Or could be vv). I believe you can just change the bottom of the distributor shaft but your best bet may be to source a SH distributor from an SD1 or land/range rover.

Might be worth checking the condidition of the oil pump before fitting as the bottom plate can wear. Scoring can be recitified by machining or even flatting using abrasive on a flat surface is your patient.

Thanks for the info, but I would like to keep my existing distributor and just get away with changing the oil pump to the P6 type, but I'm not sure if this will fit the SD1 cover. Sorry I didn't make myself clear enough on my original posting.

The problem is the oil pump is different on the SD1 type cover. The gears are taller so you can't use the P6 gears. This is the other reason to use the SD1 cover apart from the better oil seal.

Just remembered! RPI (search through google) used to sell an upgrade kit for the P6 type cover which consisted of a set of SD1 size gears with a P6 type drive. Extra room for the gears was provided by a spacer plate between the bottom of the pump and the pump cover. A set were sold on ebay a few months back or RPI may have stocks?

I think your easist option is to change the distributor.
