Series 1 Wing Mirrors

Hi All,
I was hopeing someone could help me, I am getting ready to paint my front wings on my series 1 P6, and I have come upon a problem. Where do the wing mirrors belong???!!!!!

I have done a search onthe internet, and some series 1 pictures have none, some have them on the wings, some have them on the doors and some have both, and it is a tiny bit confusing!!!! (some I dont think are really series 1 and they are lieing to me to make my life harder!!)

Hello NiGHTowl,

As your front wings don't have the mirrors already, don't worry about fitting them. My understanding is that the many cars had no external mirrors fitted at all. The Rovers that I have seen here in Australia are a hotch potch, and no two have I seen with the same type of mirrors. They all seem to be different.

Ron.

If they did have them I think the S1 would have had wing mirrors mostly, but I daresay Rover or the dealer who sold the car would have put them on the doors if the customer asked them too. Put them where you prefer them. It's all good & there are plenty of period mirrors out there.

The wing mirrors go through a hole (about 7/8") in the front wing. You can't miss them.

If there aren't any holes, you don't have any wing mirrors. :)

The door mirrors are normally screwed onto the door beside the quaterlight.

(some I dont think are really series 1 and they are lieing to me to make my life harder!!)
LOL - There are some series one pictures in the gallery if you are not sure.

The original door mirror is the 'winguard' and looks like this

Hi,

I had exactly the same query back in 1995 when I was doing just that - back then we didn't have the forum and submitted my question to the P6News. John Glinn was kind enough to reply with the following info from James Taylor's famous book on the P6:

"From the outside, 1974-season cars were also distinguished by a door-mounted, rear-view mirror, a former option which has now been standardised to meet recently introduced European regulation."

he also states:

"Door-mounted rear view mirrors listed as optional from June 1970."

A second reply from Mr Stasiw gave a diagram of how to fit door mirrors which he says was from a copy of the Rover Service News Letter Vol 2 No 33 dated June 1968.

So for the sake of "originality" it would depend on the year of your vehicle, and whether you go for the 1968 or 1970 version of the optional door mirror. But prior to that, you would go with the wing mirror.

SydneyRoverP6B is correct in that pre 1974, mirrors were optional, and of course the small amount of traffic on the roads in those days meant that many people did not buy the optional extra - my Grandad didn't - so I retrofitted to the doors - mine is 1971 and I went in line with the above info.

Hope this helps,
Cheers,
Brian.

Thanks for your replies :D

The car is 1969, so it probably came with none (original wings are not on the car anymore, one of the wings that was on it was that damaged you could have used it as a kitchen siv, and the other one didnt exsist, so I nicked some from a P6 in a scrap yard, 1 has a hole in the wing the other doesn't LOL).... but for the safety factor of being able to see the loonies behind me (also any car acidents :p ) I am fitting some anyway.

Also I have heard, that the wing mirrors (that go on the wings) are really rubbish for seeing anything out of, anyone know if this is true?

Unless you're an originality obsessive I would just do whatever you think is nicest.
Personally I dont like wing mounted mirrors on a P6 they look like bulls lugs even though mine should really have them so when I find them I'll be fitting my Series 2 winguard door mirrors.
The car is currently fitted with some nasty black 80's style door mirrors which are just WRONG but the original & now very crusty front wings have had mirrors in them & the holes have been bodged up.

That is just my take on things It's entirely your choice
Regards Colin

Hehe I agree with you there about the wing mirrors, I think they just look wrong!

I think I will go for door mirrors as there are some holes in the new doors for them.
I got some new doors as the old ones were well, how can I put it...... falling off the car, rotten, rust brown and not green, rubbish. I could have saved them I suppose, with ALOT of effort, and I mean ALOT! but I figured get some doors in a better state would be easiest option.

Geez I know what needs doing to the car, but I need more time in the day for it!!! Want to get her on the road dammit!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Has anyone perfected a successful method of filling the mirror holes in the front wings? At the moment I have an ugly looking nut thing on the o/s wing. The n/s had no mirror and I have no intention of drilling it to match!

If, like me and others here, you don't like the standard wing mirror arrangement, there is factory photographic evidence for bullet type racing mirrors on S1's. North American export TC's had them as standard and they were mounted on the edges of the bonnet close up towards the screen.

If anyone wants a decent photo of this arrangement I can scan a contemporary brochure and email - I just don't have a photoshop account to post within here.

I've seen pictures of export S1's with bullet mirrors. One on the drivers door & one on the bonnet on the passenger side, unless my memory serves me wrong. Regardless, this is how I plan to mount the bullet mirrors I have for The Bruiser.
And we welded up the wing mirror holes & filled them as mentioned by Dave. It's really the only way apart from grommets plugging them.

The series one 2000 Ian sold on ebay recently had two bullet mirrors on the bonnet. But they were about half way down.

Yes, I saw that but I'll be putting the bonnet mounted one nearer to the screen. I'd have definitely gone for that car if I didn't have 5 already.
