Shock Towers

Hello!
I am a new member from California and I have a 1970 Rover 3500S NADA.
I want to replace my shocks. My mechanic says I need shock towers to go along with the shocks.
The UK supplier says he never heard of shock towers.
My question is: Do you know what these are and whether my new shocks will work without them?

Thanks.

Albert

Hello Albert

As I understand it the shock tower in where the top of your rear shock sits, but I have personally never known them to need replacing? If they are rotted out, your new shocks will not work without them.

Can you take your rear seat out and have a look?

Or he has no idea what he's talking about, or just doesn't want the business because he has no idea what the car is..

I've heard of them related to other cars which have the front shocks mounted into the upper front inner wings but never in regard to the P6 which as you may well know has the bellcrank suspension system in the front which transfers all forces to the bulkhead.
That's not to say that the P6 hasn't got them because as you can see from Quattro's photo it has a version of them at the rear but the only thing that could go wrong with them is rust & l've never heard of them needing attention at all as they seem to be one of the base unit sections that don't suffer from it wherever the car lives.
You may want to ask your mechanic to specify his meaning.

And regarding the front shocks they need to work in reverse to most other cars so need to have the correct valves fitted.

Hello Albert,

I have seen the occasional car where the shock towers are bolted to the body (not the Rover), so my assumption is that is what he is referring to. I dare say he has no idea about the Rover.

Here is an image of a shock tower for the circa 1968 Ford Mustang. This is what the mechanic is thinking of, and for our Rover, it does not have them, not in the sense that they are a regular item to replace.

wouldn't you have to put in a longer shockie if you went down the shock tower route ?

yES, Rangys have removable shock towers at the front! And they have been known to break, and come off the chassis! I have seen a rangy that needed its front axle casing replaced due to being bent, producing negative camber.
