Sidecar fun

Was going to stick this in the thread on immersion heaters in the Electrics forum but it's a bit off topic (though you can see the Estoura in the background of the 2nd vid)

Cold starting isn't all about fuel injection, here's a couple of vids of my Square Four outfit in the snow last week. Started 2nd kick despite it being -8deg outside. Unfortunately when we arrived at the swimming pool we discovered the heating was broken, they let us in to swim but I wish they hadn't!

Managed to get it very sideways coming out of supermarket carpark as dusk fell and the roads iced up. Very easy to catch with bike steering tho'

Nice squariel, good to see it being used, third wheel definately the way forward for the snow, I tried getting out on my enduro bike and promptly fell off of it and proceeded to slide down the road pirouetting gracefully as my limbs thrashed in all directions comical really, luckily I didn't break me or the bike so once I found a patch I could stand up on it was home for tea and afternoon TV and sit it out.
Good on yer for being a hardy soul and getting the bike out,
Keep your flint sharp and your powder dry,
Ride safe,
Jon.

What is the piston formation on a Square 4 ? Are the pistons all aligned vertically ? I assume it's not a "boxer"flat 4 formation ?

That is correct, there are four pistons running in pairs on two 180deg cranks. The cranks are coupled together by two large straight gears that can knock like hell and make you think your big ends are gone!

A joy to ride but you have to get used to people in petrol stations telling you that they overheat on the rear cylinders (they don't!)

The original design from 1931 was 600cc and had an OHC, very unusual and more than a little fragile as the big-ends are overhung. I've ridden a very good example belonging to German friend and they are so smooth it is unreal. Unfortunately they have become very expensive and soon likely to break the £20k barrier....
