Hi all i need some help!!!

I have a V8 and i cannot get the spark plugs out of the engine my spark plug spanner wont do it.

It just touches the engine and not the plug.

Does anybody have any ideas why?

This has been aired on this site before. You need to grind away the outside diameter of a plug socket or make one by getting a box spanner and cutting and welding it down to size

Hi There,
In the original tool kit supplied with the car there was a box spanner especially for changing the plugs.
My answer to the problem was to get a standard spark plug socket, and grind the end to a chamfer, thus allowing the socket to fit into the recess. I also find it handy to remove the brake master cylinder heat shield to make access to the rear plug on the right hand bank a lot easier.
If you get stuck I can mail you a piccy of the socket that I modified. :)

I've found it! But the mrs has lent the camera to someone for the afternoon. I'll post a piccy as soon as I get the camera back.

Best Wishes

My standard Halfords issue spark socket fits fine.

The one next to the master cylinder is tight but never not managed to get a plug out.

Here are the piccy's of my spark plug socket. The trick is to grind off just enough for it to fit neatly into the spark plug recess. I done mine on a bench grinder.
I've had to link them to the URL below as the pictures are huge!

There was one for sale on E bay a while ago !!
I'm trying to grind down a 3/8" drive socket I have spare but it's hard going on my cheapo bench grinder
Might try the angle grinder

The trick is not to grind too much away. The outside of the socket needs to be a snug fit in the recess of the cylinder head. This will stop the socket cracking if you have a very tight plug. :D

Just a little addition on this old thread.
5 mins with the dremel and wham, old plugs out new ones in.

That was the third socket i'd bought, fed up with taking them back!
