Spring Assisters

A while back there was someone looking for spring assisters for use when caravan towing. Found these the other day on Ebay , they are listed for Maestro but if you read the ad they are actually universal in a number of sizes according to how close your spring coils are.

Many years ago I saw some inflatable balls that could be used with leaf springs when towing. Has anyone heard of them and are they still available.

The spring assisters that Chris mentions are easily available in various sizes from any good caravan accesory place from about £15+ a set.
You will need to know the spacing between the coils when its not under load.
Dead easy to fit as well!!

Hi all.

Just got myself a set of coil spring assisters for the P6,as it is a little soft on the d/s back end.
Found a universal s/h set on Ebay for a total of £6.20p!
It cost the seller £7 in p/p so a good deal!!!!

I have got a spare set of springs I will fit them to,and then pop them in.
Been trying to obtain a set of h/d rear springs but my known source hasnt produced them yet!
Will wind up the shocks to stiffen them as well.
They are a VERY tight fit into the springs coils,a smear of grease, and opening the spring gaps up a little with a compressor in reverse will help!!
Will do the before and after pics of the unladen ride height as I go!!

Hi all
Well one hour and 2 cups of tea later and what a difference 2 inches makes!!!
Wound up the shocks to 80% stiffness, and the handling is much better!!! :D

Uprated shocks and springs are an ideal. Gaz have shocks that can stiffen and soften the ride at the click of a button. An idea for tose looking to replace them. I have just fitted a set which not only look excellent but have stiffened the car right up. I have lowered mine by 1 1/2" but that is just personal choice.

Do not list P6, but have just made mine, so will know your requirements. Ideally you would supply them with a front and rear shock and spring and tell them whatyou want to do, i.e. lower etc.

Last time I went to Demon Tweaks (I think it was them), but that was 20 years ago

Pilkie

Does your seller have them in stock or were they a one -off ?

The car looks much better with the rear a bit higher

Hi Dave.
They were a £1.20 + £5 p/p bargain off ebay on xmas eve!! It cost the seller £7 just to post them so he lost out!!
My local caravan center has them from £15,but worth keeping an eye on the bay for whatever it is youre after!!
I am addicted to Ebay, and grab bargains when I can!
My last bargain was what turned out to be fully restored TR6 highback seats for £80!
They ended Xmas day eve!!
One dealer ive found does them for £650 exchange!!
I will not however be selling them on,but I may sell the original style std leather ones I bought a while back!
Cheers Dave

I am of a mind, lowering the car improves the aesthetics of the P6 as well as reducing wallowing...... sticking the backside in the air puts me in mind of women I have seen dancing at ragga and garage nights at Ilford palais. Ideal I suppose if you have a body to load in the boot God forbid.

Purely out of interest, how much has your motor gone up by Pilkie, 3 - 4 inches?

I agree about the look of a small amount of lowering!!
Its gone up 2",but I have been running 195/70x14" tyres so that lowered it a bit,it was just the right look and a tad more tread on the road!
But they are now knackered and ive bunged on a spare set that are a bit higher as they are std 185x14"s.
A new set of 195/65 tyres soon will hopefully bring it down about an inch'ish to a better level look whilst maintaining the benefits of the assisters.
I do use the boot for autojumbles and ive got a trailer.
I dont want to mess with adjusting it all the time,.
You would have to go for a fully height and damping adjustable spring /shock combo.
In std spec the spring you use, std, lower, uprated etc, determines the ride height, and the std adjustable shocks only stiffens or softens the damping of the bounce!"firm or floaty!"

I fitted a pair of those rubber assistors to my 820 for our trip to France last year, worked a treat and allowed us to bring more wine back !

I used to have some Spax adjustables on my old chevette, the adjustment went from very hard to rock solid ! :D
