Starter Motor / Flywheel

Hello my 3500 auto was converted to SD1 5-speed box before my recent ownership. I understand the conversion required bellhousing and flywheel too, am I right?

However, my starter motor has packed-in. I sourced a working (well it cranked a car over) used unit from a P6 Club member. It came from a 4-speed 3500s

I fitted it flush to the housing but it won't turn the flywheel -all I can hear is the solenoid kick it into life and then the motor spins. You can hear the actuator cog clicking lightly against flywheel but is disengaged from flywheel teeth as not turning it.

Are the starter motor settings different? Are the starter motors themselves for SD1 flywheel different? It's a Lucas unit labelled 542469370FH

Sure, (I couldn't get to it earlier today, it was stored elsewhere...) and it's same make and model. I've since rigged-up a 9v source on a workbench and both starters thrust fine, both solenoids too..

My post was premature, I agree! It suddenly occured to me (lying on my back outside in the cold, I guess I was getting a bit fed-up and impatient at the time) that I might be wasting my time if flywheel match might be different.

I've had this happen to me.

In my case it was the electrics into the motor were faulty, dirty contact from the place known as the 'hole'. It was draining just enough current to stop the motor turning over but engaged/disengaged the solenoid with that clicking sound.

I'd check the electrics for dirty contacts first.

You know what Rovertron, that's exactly what it was in the end! Cleaned are terminals properly and once a fresh battery fitted it thrusts fully...

....ah but the friendly RAC man insisted it was starter motor and not battery - hence I took his experience as red and didn't question it or attempt to think it through. Back to basics really! Oops.

Thanks.

If it makes you feel any better Paprika, I have the 'replacement' starter motor in my boot because of exactly the same reason. The recovery chap said exactly the same thing.

Spooky.
