hi,

my original earth strap was knackered so i bought one from partco it is slightly thinner could this be my problem ?

also is there a better place that i could attach the earth strap ? im at my wits end with this project it just seems to go from bad to worse i can see me flogging my p6 if i cant get these nippy problems sorted :D

You could try using a jump lead from the engine block to the battery earth to see if the earth lead is to blame
Did you try the starter motor out before installing it ?
Is the ring gear on the flywheel OK , I'm wondering if the pinion is trying to engage but can't
Best of luck
Dave

Starter motor clicking:
I had the similar problem twice.
1. The battery had discharged too much to turn the starter motor. I recharged the battery and it worked.
2. The ground strap was corroded as it attached to the base unit. Tested the theory with the black lead of a starter cable. Connect between the starter body the base unit.

Best wishes,
Eric

HI,

Im still no further forward with this , i have tightened all the wires , fully charged the battery ,turn the key and it justs clicks . If i turn on the headlights and turn the key it clicks then the lights dim, the starter is perfect . I fitted my gearbox to the car first then i dropped the engine in and bolted them together . Is there a chance that the flywheel is jammed ? and would i need to take the engine back out to sort it ?

any help would be magic

just a thought if you short the starter it engages itself and therefore the car will not start.
if you put the car in gear and rock it you will hear a click which is the starter disengaging.happened to me a while back shorted the starter, car would not then start.only when i was in the pit and tried pushing the car when in gear did i hear the click.
cheers steve

Cheers steve im going to try this tonight ill pop it in first then try rocking back and forward if that fails ill maybe put it together an try towing it .

cheers again steve

can you turn the engine over by hand? (might have to whip out the plugs) then you would at least know its ok.
You said the starter is perfect? how do you know that? have to removed it from the car, put it on the ground connect a batery with jump leads, the neg to the body, put your foot on the housing to stop it moving around and connect the pos to the motor side of the solinoid. The motor will then turn. If not its goosed. If it does turn then connect 12V to the solinod wire, then hold the pos jump lead on the other main terminal (you may hear the solinod click as you connect the 12V - use a wire about 4-5mm thick hear). If you get a click but still no turning then the solinoid contacts are not making, if you get no click then the input side of the solinod is duff.
Towing the car may get it going and provide a boost in moral but unless you solve the above you'll need a tow start every time :D

Does the engine turn over by hand ? Will it start with a tow ?
Then you can establish whether the engine/box are mechanically OK
