I've done some checks, the battery is perfect, and there are no connection problems. What happens is that the starter is very noisy, and often has to spin for longer than is needed, and other times, it just won't turn.
Just a thought??
Manual and auto starters are the same, arent they??
I know the ring gear/flywheels differ,just wondering?
Is there a spacer between the starter and bellhousing?, if so is it nice and clean as this is its earthing point!
if there should be one,is it missing?
Kev or Harvey will know for sure!!

hi marcus,
the difference is, the long thing sticking out as you put it is the early inertia starter and the later ones with the housing round the best part of it are pre-engaged.
