hi,
also try cleaning the positive lead where it goes through the floor under your pedals, but like john says odds on it will be a bad earth.

If that fails, give the starter a whack with a spanner or something.

I had a similar problem on My stage 1 land rover, I gave it a whack almost eveytime I went out but it eventually stopped working. The wire had came off the end of the brush.

did anyone else see the news story about the woman who was killed hitting the starter with a hammer? the starter was faulty so she whacked it, but the ignition was iffy and remained live even though it was off, so the car started. the handbrake was knackered so it was in 1st and lurched forward into her, and she tried to grab something but found the throttle cable and revved he car over herself.

The Police described it as extremely unfortunate...

It was in England but I forget where- Milton Keynes of Slough or somewhere. I read it in a newspaper about a month ago. If anyone remembers...It made a half page in one of the dailys

There were photos and everything! Pic of the car at the scene and a collect of the woman. If it gets quiet today I'll go through the archives and find names and dates.

Found this,

A bit scarey really, when our land rovers starter was playing up it occasionally was sorted by a whack, I also gave a demo to the wife. Sounds like this woman did the same thing but without taking precautions.

Suppose it is a tragic event like this that should make us all think about taking proper precautions before working on cars.

MUM KILLED BY CAR SHE HIT WITH HAMMER Apr 13 2005

By Jeremy Armstrong

A MUM was run over and killed by her own car after she hit it with a hammer in frustration.

Alison Taylor, 36, started banging the engine of her Peugeot 405 when it would not start - triggering a chain of events caused by faults on the car, an inquest was told.

The blows set off the broken starter motor. Even though the ignition was switched off, the circuit was still live and the engine started. The car lurched forward because the handbrake was broken. Knocked off-balance, Alison reached out and grabbed the throttle cable, which made the 1.3tonne car accelerate over her.

Her mother Marjorie Rundle heard a terrifying screech as the wheels carried on spinning as it went down a grass embankment with Alison trapped underneath. Mrs Rundle told North Tyneside coroner's court: "She got out and I heard a sound like a washing machine on a very high spin.

"The car made a small jump forward followed by a much larger one.

"I couldn't see Alison at all, so I ran to the back of the car, which had gone down an embankment. There was smoke coming from the front and I saw Alison trapped underneath."

Mum-of-one Alison, of Camperdown, North Tyneside, had just dropped her son Daryl, 12, at a school meeting at Seaton Burn Community College. PC George Rutter said the ignition, handbrake and starter motor were all damaged, leading to September's tragedy. He added: "It is one of the strangest cases I've come across."

The family had planned to get rid of the car that week.

Alison's husband Kenneth and other relatives would not comment after the hearing. Verdict: accident.

but, its nothing new, thanks to e-bay I have some car mechanics magazines from the early 1960's and there are warnings of similar problems - leaving the car in gear, duff handbrake, haul on the starting handle, - result one injured or worse owner OR mechanic - there was one story about a garage mechanic who also suffered.

Mind you they were going on about being monaned at by garages for getting a gallon of petrol and handing over a whole pound - for only a gallon! tut tut! and road tax at £15 a year.......

That Peugeot must have had the ignition on and been in gear , or why else would it have fired up and driven off ?
This is what comes of living with faults rather than fixing them . I wonder if it was taxed and insured ......
I remeber my 1960's Fords when the starter solenoids had rubber buttons to push , but not on automatics , for this very reason
How many of us get under cars supported only by a trolley jack ......
Dave

I walk the dog past a garage where they are regularly working under not only cars but large vans supported by trolly jacks.

One morning they had a van up in the air and the chap was underneath wrenching away at the exhast system.......it was a bit like watching an episode of casualty if you know what I mean.
