If it runs in the "Start" position on the key then you have the supply from the starter to the coil for initial start-up, but have no normal ignition supply. Test this with a testlamp to prove the point, and then you will need to find where you are losing the feed for normal running. Could be a fuse, the ballast resistor wire faulty, a faulty ignition switch or just a wire that has got knocked off somewhere.
Could also be that it's had the wrong coil (12v) fitted and the ballasted supply won't give enough for a good spark.
