hi need some help, just bought a 1971 3500s which was of the road for a while and was trying to start it, it starts fine but only runs when the key is in the start position , as soon as i let the key go back to the run position it cuts out, could it be coil? condenser?or the live feed from the starter, or something else, cheers dave.

If it runs in the "Start" position on the key then you have the supply from the starter to the coil for initial start-up, but have no normal ignition supply. Test this with a testlamp to prove the point, and then you will need to find where you are losing the feed for normal running. Could be a fuse, the ballast resistor wire faulty, a faulty ignition switch or just a wire that has got knocked off somewhere.
Could also be that it's had the wrong coil (12v) fitted and the ballasted supply won't give enough for a good spark.

thanks for the reply, the car was outside for about a year and the carpet in the passenger foot well was very wet so i will look at the fuse box for corosion , about the fuse holder next time i am in the garage.cheers , dave.
