My guitar playing has taken a back seat to the cars for a few years now though I fully intend to start playing again........someday. My fingernails are too weak for the strings & I don't like playing with fingertips so I used to go to one of the local nail-bars & have them put tips & enamel on my right hand. Used to get a few strange looks from some of the ladies also having work done in there. I never bothered putting them straight unless they asked. 
After I started the Missus decided to start getting hers done though for cosmetic reasons rather than practical. Working on the cars always took it's toll on the false nails though & I envy people with strong nails such as Phil on 'Timeteam'. His must be like metal, all that digging & scraping & they're always long. Julian Bream said his nails were a useful physical gift, being so strong.
