SU HS6 carb

Just wondering if anyone has a decent HS6 that I can have cheap. The one on mine is very worn, and I wondered if anyone had one cheap. I'll rebuild mine soon, but this is just on the off chance.

I have 2 HS6 carbs in my garage that I got a while ago to refurbish......before realising that my car had HIF6s (seems like an age ago when I knew nothing about these cars  ). Apart from looking ok visually I'm not sure what sort of condition they are in. Everything moves freely. If I get a chance this weekend I'll whip the dashpots off and have a look inside. Not ideal I know but if you get stuck you can have one.

I was down your neck of the woods (Dumfries) last night. Treachorous drive down there on very icy roads. Better run back up.

Cheers Dave, that'd be great. Yup, the roads were pretty awful last night, they weren't too good this morning either, but they seem much clearer now.

I think I'd get that exhaust seen to first. You'd be surprised how much difference an exhaust with incorrect back pressure has on the running of the engine.

Chris

Thanks Chris. I hope to get the exhaust sorted out properly in the next week or so, as it's useless as it stands. As you say, once the exhaust is sorted I'll have a far better idea as to whether or not the carb is a priority.

Hi Dave,
Did you manage to get a look at the carbs? :)
Cheers,
Fraser

Sorry, been a bit busy with the car and missed your prompt. I haven't had a chance to dig those carbs out yet. Will have a look when I can, unless someone else gets you some sooner.

Dave

Hi Fraser

I've managed to have a look at the 2 HS6 carbs I have in the garage and I've posted some photos for you. They're both in pretty much the same condition so you can take your pick.

The float bowls are not interchangeable between V8 and 4 Cylinder. This I found out after several days of running problems. The 4 cyl bowl sits lower on the carb.

I think there are also different Jets and Needles?

Colin

Thanks Colin

I had presumed the needles and jets would be different but they're easy to change. Is there anything that can be done to the float bowl height? Is it a different float bowl or a different body?

Dave

Unless you know your carb body is worn Frazzle I'd suggest holding out till you can go for a service kit and do the job once :)

Doesn't take that long to do with one carb and it's straight back on

The bowls are cast so you can modify them.

If you were to compare them side by side the mount is closer to the top of the float bowl. You can swap the bowls between models. It is best not to mix parts between carbs unless you are sure the part numbers match, it can give you headaches and not obvious to spot once fitted to the car.
