Tax exempt

Hi everyone

I was once the proud owner of a P6 2000 TC that was unfortunately very rotten, anyway to cut a long story short, I broke the car and sold the bits then gave the base away but forgot to give the new owner the log book. If it was you, and you remember collecting a car a few years ago from Ipswich then please get in touch, I have to keep completing a SORN! Failing that, does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Nick

Hi, you don't really need to do that. Because it won't tell you anything you don't know
already i.e. it's not taxed and is on a SORN. miniman1969 is the registered keeper
that why he keeps getting the forms.

If someone has it in a garage and are restoring it then you are giving them chance to
legalise it.

If someone has already turned it back into a car and are using it they are obviously
not taxing, MOTing and probably not insuring it. In which case telling the DVLA it is
scrapped is a good idea and let them deal with hassle from the Police or Revenue.
This may sound harsh but they started it.

Thanks

makes sense although I thought I needed the scrappies address

No, not really there is nothing stopping you cutting a car up and weighing
it into a scrap metal merchants.

Hi ive scrapped 3 rovers and just cut them up , then send the v5 to dvla saying i scrapped them, they send you a letter back that you get when you sell or scrap.
it just says thank you for letting us know you sold or scrapped the above vehicle.

if you declare it scrap u need a destruction certificate
new legislation
if u cant provide it,u will get sorn letters

Are you sure about that Brook? I just sent off the V5C of a Land Rover that I've scrapped bit by bit and am not expecting any hassles. I'll post an update if there's a problem, but I bet there won't be.

I'd be interested to know too - only because you see these rules being announced and you never know whether they'll actually be enforced or not.

At the end of the day all this SORN stuff is there to get old cars scrapped. I see no other purpose.

has i said ive scrapped 3 old rovers and ive never had any trouble you only need a certificate if your a company not if you car scrapping (dismantling a car yourself), al you do is fill out the v5 saying that you have personnaly broken the car up. you do not keep having to sorn a car that is no longer a round, i broke up my first rover 3 years ago and notified dvla i got a letter showning that it had been scrapped and ive not had anything back about the car since, if you had to keep sorn ing it i would have had a letter by now

I suspect that where Brook's coming from, is that recent V5Cs no longer have a tick box to declare that you've scrapped the car personally. So you just write a letter saying explaining that you have scrapped it, sign the V5C and post both together.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if you did tell the DVLA it had been scrapped would that cause problems for the new owner who may have spent the last 2 years restoring it to concours condition

Yes, indeed it would. He would not be able to re register it, in fact it would probably be
deemed to be assembled from parts and would have to have an SVA test. I can think of
2 things it would fail on without even trying ( emissions and no collapsible steering
column ) Which is why Miniman1969 is posting on here, to try and trace him. However,
how far does he go? Where does he draw the line?

In fact miniman1969, do you think he was going to restore it or do you think he was taking
it to weigh it in? How complete was it? Did he know the identity of the car?

Colin

Either way, the guy has had long enough to sort it from his own end IMO :)

I'd be shocked if they wouldn't reinstate it with an inspection anyhow

well dvla wont let me "self destruct " a 1986 mini mayfair
i either provide a destruction certificate or keep sorning it yearly
what they are askin me to do is technically illegal,as the car does no longer exist ,,it will never reappear, ever,so why dont the fools just wipe it off??

i shall take a rotten roof pillar from another mini and ask for my destruction certificate??

from the direct.gov web site!!

""If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either continue to tax it or tell the DVLA that you are keeping it off the public road. You can do this by making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). You will need to make a SORN every year until you have taken it to an ATF, or told DVLA that you longer have it.""

Write a letter telling them you no longer have the car,""send it to the DVLA address on the V5C and send that in as well"",as you removed various parts for spares for your other car,and then had it taken away by a scrap man who called at your door asking if you if you wanted to get rid of it.

The other alternative is basically to pick a name address and postcode out of thin air, fill it in and send it off! :)
Who's to know if the person you "sold it to" gave you a correct address or not! :)

Do that and the first thing they will ask you is to show them the "Duty Of Care" certificate from the bloke who took it away, and because you won't have one, because he didn't give you one, because he wasn't registered to remove waste by the Environment Agency, then you will be in a whole shed load more trouble than you ever thought possible.

To be fair, the average person,"clapped out banger owner",has no idea about the rules regarding scrapping cars, and most will just ring a man up to get rid,or if a knock on the door comes and they want rid will just get rid.
Now if that man is a good scrap man he will do what is req to satisfy the DVLA red tape,so if the dvla aint happy with what you and MANY others will probably have done!!!
It wasnt all that long ago the law changed, and many wont be aware of it,and will still have the old V5 to inform them its scrapped.
I got rid of 2 x P6 shells, sent the dvla the log books along with a letter telling them I no longer had them and it had been scrapped and that was that.
Bear in mind that if the car has been off the road or scrapped before 1998 you dont have to declare sorn anyway.
You may find it less hassle to just fill in a "new keeper" name and address and send it off.
You should then get a letter within 4 wks saying you are no longer responsible for it.
Its a right PITA,and a hassle,as most scrap yards recycle properly anyway, you could always chat to your local scrappie and see what they say!
