Tesco's finest 99 Octane

The Friendly Local Tesco's Empire has opened up a petrol station just down the road from me. Not that I'm complaining, the local BP garage charges 119p for unleaded because its the only place around, in fact, I think they just use the dartboard method to "calculate" the cost of the petrol per litre on any given day, seeing as it has no co-relation to the prices in the rest of town.

This Tesco's Petrol Station, however, is advertising 99 octane. I knew Tesco's did this as there are other Station's in town that sell 99 octane. The difference is that I've now got a local station selling it.

The 10.5:1 engine prefers 100 octane, so 99 octane + octane additive + lead additive = a close representation to y'old time original 5 star, no?

How much of a difference will this make to a 4cyl, is it worth setting the ignition to its original intended setting? Is it worth spending £5 a litre or however much it will be?

Regards

Fraser

I've just filled up with 99octane BP fuel, I've had a twiddle with the timing and tbh I've gone backwards here. It just wont settle down. I've got no pinking but the acceleration feels flat under load. I'm using straight lead replacement, but I've had a go with octane boost/lead replacement in the past and I didn't really rate it that much. Thought I felt a difference at first but it could be a placebo effect if you see my meaning.

Hi Fraser,

I frequently use Tesco 99 - as you say, our engines were designed for 5 star 100 RON and this is the closest we're going to get. Combine that with my Tetraboost Real Lead additive, I get a good 2 point octane boost, so I'm generally running 101 - 102 RON and Vanessa goes like a train on it, fabulous stuff!!! ............... and you can put your ignition timing back to a more sensible figure than TDC !!!

Tesco 99 is supposed to be supplied by Greenergy

Cheers,
Bri.

That's interesting, I use the Castrol Valvemaster or Valvemaster Plus. It's reliable but I'm not absolutely blown away by it's qualities. I'll try to find a supply of the Tetraboost though and give it a go. Used to use Miller's VSP which I thought was great but nowhere round here sells it anymore. I'm going to start another thread about additives so as not to take this thread off course.

I take back the above post, my dizzy arm just packed up on me on the way home. It would appear that the symptoms I had coincided with the visit to the petrol station and were down to a failing rotor arm (only put it on 3wks ago :x ), it's definitely behaving better at the high end of the rev range but I'll have to get into dialling the timing in properly soon to clean up the low end. Still a little bit flat under load.
