The Infamous Wiper Delay

Hi all,

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I can't find the answer in the Search.

Sponge replaced and the delay now works..but the pause position is with the wipers in the middle of the screen. Yet they park correctly on slow or fast continuous.

Where do I tinker? :)

It sounds as if one or more wires are connected to the wrong terminals. Can you check them again using the wiring diagram as a reference?

Thanks Demetris, must admit I hadn't considered that!

Switch #90
Delay Governor #105
Motor #106

The governor probably looks favourite if there has been a mix up as the connections are on Lucars. I'll have an investigate in the light.

Cheers,

I think the delay governor connections were OK..looking at the wiring diagram I thought it was worth swapping the PLG & NLG. Only succeeded in taking out the fuse. I'll have a look at the switch, but I suspect the problem's somewhere in the governor itself or the motor. Hmmm....

Has the little spring which makes the white plunger return fallen off ?

There is only one parking switch on the motor as far as I know .If it parks on normal speed , the probelm can't be electrical

No, the spring's still there Dave. The wiper's have always been pretty sluggish to start on Slow, so I've had the wiper motor out and stripped it down today. Commutator was very dirty but came up all right with white spirit. Governor looked to be working as it should as well...hmmm. Re-packed the case and rack with grease and both speeds work fine now from switch on.

Still the same problem on the delay though... Bit more investigating to do.

Were they OK before you did something? And what was that? Remove the motor along with the governor?
The motor is connected with a multiplug so that everything goes back at the right place. So if you haven't touched anything on the switch side then my money is on wrong connections on the governor.
Don't get me wrong but old cables are not easily distinguishable. At least from me.
Anyway, the terminal 1 on the governor should be obvious, as lucar that goes on this one should have a double cable. So NLG on terminal 1 should be double.
By the way, are the terminals marked (1,2,3) on your governor? Because they weren't on mine and i had to guess, try, and i when got it right i marked them with a pen. If they are, it should be easy. I would suggest that you swap the lucars on terminals 2 and 3.
If they are not, then you have more options. You might use a few fuses, but you'll get there.

Hi Demetris,

The wipers on continuous have always been a bit sluggish at start-up since I got the car...they're fine now I've given the motor some TLC. The governor cable colours are quite plain...and the delay wasn't working at all until I renewed the sponge. NLG (double), PLG and ULG went back on the same terminals after that, and today as well.

I've not touched the switch or altered the multiplug so I'm inclined to think you're right about the governor connections...I've only swapped terminals 1 & 2 which took the fuse out. I'll try swapping 2 & 3 in the morning.

Cheers,

Did you manage to resolve your wiper delay problem?

I have a similar problem with mine. The delay was working fine then over a period of time it started to pause in the middle of the screen before returning to the park postion. Now when I select delay the wipers sweep to the middle of the screen and just sit in there. They will only return to park when I put the switch to the off position. I've checked the plunger operation on the delay governor and that seems to be ok. I've also cleaned all the connecting terminals. I think it might be an earth problem (not the first I've had on this car). If I understood exactly how the delay governor worked that would be a start. I'm off on hols for the next 2 weeks so I'll leave you and anyone else who reads this to cogitate the problem and see what comes up and look forward to reading the multitude of responses when I get back. :)

Ever Hopefull

cheers

Isn't it bizarre how one minute you can be discussing a problem and the next minute the solution presents itself out of the blue. In my last post I said:

. Well whilst thumbing through some back issues of P6 News I came a cross and article in Vol 23 No 1 dated Feb 2007 called 'Wiper Motor Operation P6 Series II' by Anthony Ryalls. In it he gives a detailed explanation with diagrams on the complete workings of the wiper system......BRILLIANT! :D

now I can go on hols happy that I have a way forward when I get back

I've found the time to finally fix my wiper delay problem. After reading an article in a back issue of P6 News I traced the fault to corroded contacts in the delay governor. I removed it from the wiper motor, undid the 4 clips and cleaned the inside, including the contacts and after putting it back together the delay works a charm. Interestingly after reading many posts about the condition of the diaphragms in these things I was pleasantly surprised to find mine in pristine condition.

Many apologies for not taking any pics. It's only when I got it all working again that I thought "wouldn't it have been a good idea to take pics of the governor when it was dismantled and post them on here?"................. sorry guys

good luck anyone else trying to fix their wiper delay.

cheers

Dave
