The Steepest Street in the World

The small village of Grosmont http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grosmont,_North_Yorkshire , home of Steam Trains on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, has two very steep hills coming out of it. The one back to the A169 is reported to be 1 in 3. Sparky trundled up there quite easily, but certainly had to be a in a low gear.

There is another one further down the track which goes up, when travelling towards Levisham Station, in a 1 in 4. So you boot it a bit to find a hairpin bend part way up. That was the only place where I heard Sparkys 205s touch the inside of the D post as I had to heave the steering round a bit hard.

Not a Rover but I did drive up it in a van a few years back. I was quite surprised that it made it all the way up actually, an automatic '97 Nissan Homy 2.7 diesel, but it chugged all the way to the top. It was a lot harder trying to walk up and down it in fact. I've heard that the local kids skateboard down it.

I had an old Skoda once, and lived on a steep street called Strechan Hill.

I had to take the Skoda back to the car sales place informing them that I could only get up to 75 on Strechan Hill and he said that was very good for such a car, as it was a very steep hill, 75 wasn't bad at all

I had to further explain that I lived at number 87. 8)

I'd better get my coat before someone else does

Has anyone driven their Rover up this street?

There are some steep streets in Sydney, some I have driven up, others I have cycled over, but none are as steep as that one...

Ron.

Yes I have driven my Rover up it and also down it, around 1988/9, I hardly think it is the steepest street in NZ at all, there is a street in Christchurch which makes that look like a slight incline, Ramahana Road on Clifton or St Andrews Hill, also driven the Rover up and down that one too.
I once had a bad experience on a very steep street in Nelson city in my Hilman Hunter forward motion was stopped as I climbed the street not because of a lack of power (truelly amazing as a 1750 Hunter is a bit gutless) but the street was so steep that the tyres could not gain traction, eventually the car stopped and with the hand brake on I got out of the car installed the wife in the drivers seat with the instruction to turn the wheels hard lock whilst I pushed sideways at the front of the car so that we could turn the car around and get the hell off that badly designed street,I might add the road was new (as were my tyres) and there was a very slight ie bugger all bit of fine small shingle still on the road from its recent sealing.

I don't know if this compares but it probably is the steepest street I've gone down, (doubt the Co car ,Citroen C3 1.4 diesel would get up it!) , but going down it was bad enough! My foot was jammed hard on the brake, arms locked outstretched against the steering wheel-you get the picture. It's in Tottertown , in Bristol which is a incredibly steep area anyway, but this is of the eyeballs bursting out variety......
