Twisting Engine

rebuilt engine and several have warned that using the choke can cause the bores to be washed with gas and cause scoring.

Excessive use of the choke can cause problems, and at any time, not just when running in, but normal use won't cause any problems at all.

There was something in Pratical Classics a couple months ago about an old boy who had a low milage car who over winter would start it once a week thinking it was stopped the engine from deteriorating but had in fact caused massive bore ware. But even in that case took years to take effect.
This is bad practice as the oil doesn't get up to temperature and burn off the toxins and condensation. Also as we all know, the harshest wear takes place when an engine is cold :)

Ok lets start from the start!! In the old days I was quite happy if my p6 moved backwards and forwards. How it ran was unimportant , running was a bonus!!

After a rather nasty shock when one of the carbs jammed on full spurting fuel on to the exhaust manifold, this was an issue that could no longer be ignored!!

Seeing as one carb was now rebuilt I attempted to get things running properly. New plugs, leads dizzy cap condensor points and rotor. Set timing to how it sounded best checked vac advance working ensured all rubber pipe connections correctly routed and in good condition. Next balanced carbs using a hollow plastic tube in the ear, set idle at 700 left mixture settings as was. Starts fine with choke say three quarters then starts hunting a bit (engine vibrating the odd second or so) runs smoothly with gentle right foot after about three quarters of a mile .Slight hesitance at 1100 revs if accelerating slowly. Goes like a train if you hoof it all revs.

Milage 18 to the gallon on 1 mile runs 21/22 on 1 to 5 mile runs. 23/24 on 5 mile to 10 mile runs. 24 mpg on 10 miles plus driving with no undue harsh acceleration. Mot gas idle reading 4.5 % Personal conclusion, running slightly rich. Turned down mixture srews 1 quarter turn. Not enough power to pull away withou reving and missing a bit (OOPS too weak!) Move screws back halfway between where I moved them too and where they were and try again.

It now needs full choke to start properly but does so instantly with just a split second vibration as the engine starts. Considering all the rubber mountings on a p6 and the fact they are all 34 years old, I think this is ok. The car needs slightly longer to come off choke and needs half to three quarters once moving instead of a quarter i used to use. (To be honest I think most of the "twist" was coming from not having the choke open wide enough). Slight hestitance seems to have moved from 1100 to 1250 revs but only occurs for a split second and only when accelerating very gently. I think this is likely to be a combination of something not quite free in the carbs, (Tickover does fluctuate sometimes its 550 ish when temp just getting to 85 and when its fully warmed up nearer 700) and the fact that using the origional p6 technology (points condensor/ non injection etc),as well as useing petrol with a lower octane rating than origionally recomended.

Important bit. Still goes like a train when you hoof it. Fuel milage has improved.

Milage 19 to the gallon on 1 mile runs. 22/23 on 1 to 5 mile runs. 25 on 5 to 10 mile runs. 25 on 10 miles plus driving with no undue harsh acceleration. 26 on ten miles plus stroking it. 26.5 at 55 and 27 at constant 40 45 mph. Personal feelings are it may be running a fraction weak as revs have to be about 1000 when pulling away from standstill to do this totally smoothly. However I think I am certainly the best results that can be achieved with the current set up and no specialist equipment from a 22 tc. At this stage I feel there is any point in further final carb adjustments until the car has electronic ignition and has been rolling roaded which I intend to do within the next couple of months. ANYONE KNOW WHO IS BEST ? LUMINATION OR PETRONIX.

That sounds like a thoroughly acceptable temporary result! SimonBBC (seller name on Ebay) module sounds like the flavour of the month at the moment. Easy to fit and neat and seems to work!
