Tyres - 185/14

Out of curiosity (and because I do not know how old my tyres are), I decided to price up a set of NEW tyres. I was informed that the 185R/14 tyres I have are no longer available from the main/known manufaturers (unless I want commercial tyres) and the imports available are £40 a piece (not including balancing/fitting). Is this right and does anyone know of an alternative. The proprietor states that low profile tyres would catch the wheel arches and ruin the originality of the car. Before I blow over £250 can anyone offer an alternative????

I'm getting 165/14t Uniroyals on front tomorrow @ £50 each
(2000 SC ) from local tyre depot.
They had offered Firestones at £48.
I did tell them I did not want budget tyres and want to try to reduce road noise - Hankooks on her right now.
you can find same tyres at www.mytyres.co.uk for less but you need to get them fitted of course..... I guess the its a V8 then? or is my car on tyres to skinny?

Yes its a V8. According to the handbook the right size is 185HR/14 and 175R/14 in winter! Guess I will have to go down the line of what the garage quoted me. ???

Hi, when I bought Miss Daisy she was wearing very perished 165SR14's which I replaced with 185\70R14H, which is quite a common size as Vauxhall Vectras use them.

I hope this helps

You can still get 185 x14H tyres if you look around, Micheline do that size at a premium price, and the specialist firms you find in classic car mags can help. If your insurance company does not mind you dropping a speed rating (do you drive at 90 down the M1 ?) that http://www.mytyres.co.uk/start.html site had a 185/80 x14T Toyo listed (80 is the "full hight" profile by the way). Best to inform the insurance if you change sizes, you know what they are like come claims time.
Rons got 195/70 x14 at the moment, these have about the same circumference as 165/80 tyres fitted to 2000's etc, which is a bit less than the the 3500. See http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html
Hope this helps
Ron

well 2 new Firestone 380's on front - still lots of road noise but sterring much better than with hankooks - did not know age of these, one of reasons for changing, might change the backs next month, by which time hopefully I'll have a refurb recaliper and a fresh MOT... yes thats all she failed on...
