Tyres sizes again

I am fitting 5.5J x 14 rostyles to my 2200TC and about to order tyres. :D

Currently have 165/80/14 on the standard wheels. I could fit 185/80/14 which is standard for the V8's.

Was wondering if the rostyles have the same offset as the current wheels. I have looked at 195/70/14 or possibly 195/65/14 which seem to be equivalents either side in terms of circumference ( +/-1.3% error in speed against the 165/80/14's).

Just a bit concerned if the rostyles have a different offset might run into problems with clearance.

V8's have different hubs on the front, and cranked toplinks on the rear to give extra clearance for the wider wheels. That's not to say you wouldn't be able to fit them without, but worth bearing in mind since the clearances are going to be a lot tighter.

Hi Pat,

The Rostyles have the same offset as the standard Rover 5.5J X 14" steel wheels. As Harvey mentioned, the clearance that your Rover is going to have will be rather less than on the V8, so best to check just how much you do have before ordering just in case they don't fit.

Ron.

Ok thanks. One of them is fitted with an old 185/80/14 so I will trial fit to front and rear and measure everything. Anyone fitted 5.5" rostyle wheels to a 2000/2200?. If so what tyres did you fit?

When I got my Rostyles (5.5") they were fitted to a 1970 2000TC and had 195/75x14" tyres on them. Unfortunately my memory is a little fuzzy here bit I think that the previous owner had bent the top arms slightly for clearance. There were no other issues though. I would try the one you've got and if it's a bit tight then fit some V8 top arms.

Thanks for the info. I remember reading somewhere that the 2200's have more in common with the v8 than the 2000. I think the strengthened gearbox, diff and rear springs are the same as the v8 so maybe the cranked top links were also fitted for better parts commonality after the 2000 went out of production. Wonder if the v8's different front hubs Harvey mentioned was more to do with the 3 pot brake callipers.

Btw Do you own all those cars currently ?

No it's purely because of the wheels. V8 calipers will fit without problems.

The ones in my signature? Yes. Plus a couple of parts cars at the moment.

Those bits aren't exactly common with the V8. The 4 cyl and V8 gearboxes are quite different and the diff still kept the 4 cylinder ratio. The main difference between the 2000 and the 2200 was the fitment of the rear crossmember for the lower suspension arms. I don't think the cranked top links were ever deliberately fitted to the 4 cyls by the factory, although in those days, anything was possible. I had heard of some 2200s leaving the factory with V8 front brakes.

Well finally tried the rostyle wheel with 185 on the front and it fits but only just about 5mm clearance between the top inside face of the tyre and the swivel pillar car unloaded. I've just dropped it off the jack so the front wheels have that characteristic P6 "tucked under" positive camber look about them. On bump or under cornering will the tyre move closer to the pillar ?
I don't really want to fit V8 hubs and callipers, would it be ok to fit spacers between the wheels and the hub say 5-10mm ?

It won't make any difference as the stub axle remains constant to the pillar regardless of any movement of the suspension, and I can't see any deflection of the tyre on the rim where it's in contact with the road staying the same as the wheel rotates. Only way is to try it, and if there is a problem, just change the hubs, they are all you need for the extra clearance.

Thanks harvey

I rebuilt the 2200 callipers and fitted braided hoses last year so I don't really want to change them. Will they fit on the V8 hubs ?

Yes AFAIK all of your brake parts will be compatable with the V8 hubs. Some 2200's came off the line with V8 brakes on the 2200 hubs so the reverse is equally feasable.
