Tyres

mine are 91t rated - it is worth reading and understanding what these codes mean. Will post a link back here later if nobody beats me to it!

I think the thing that you are all missing here is the speed rating issue. All the tyres others have described are an R rating, not an H rating. The significance of this is not in the actual speed at which you are going to drive - it is in the construction standard of the tyre carcass. In particular how round it is (!), how easy to balance etc. I run 150mph rated tyres on Lucky, not because I intend to drive at that speed, but because that quality of construction gives you an overall much better performing tyre.

Sparky's are 205/65 R15 94V which apparently means they will carry 670Kgs (each tyre) up to 249mph.

I was told (when I was a young'un) that you shouldn't fit lower rated tyres to a car because its not just the speed of the car, but the power (acceleration, braking performance etc) which would be affected by the lower rating. But this was a long time ago and it appears that things have changed somewhat.

Mine were £320.00 for the set of 5, so £64.00 each including fitting and vat, so not too bad a deal.

will you ever get to that speed Mr Q. (2 can play that game)

Speed rating I presume is the S, which is upto 112mph (in my dreams)

Yes it is, I thought the lower case 's' meant you were talking about them in plural

hmm... is that a challenge? 8)

Seriously though - no  He is geared for 152 at the red line in top, but I really don't think it would be sensible to try that in a car (made from 37 year old metal) that I built myself in a shed.

Under special conditions, Lucky has sailed through 120 mph with a large amount of throttle in hand. I have felt able to enjoy this in confidence primarily because of excellent tyres but also because I know exactly the state of everything underneath. P6's can build up some quite surprising speed, just because you think they are slow off the mark doesn't mean they can't be high speed expresses. I'd much rather cater for the one time when high speed does occour than be sat there held back by the thought of what is in caontact with the road.

I like your thinking Chris, but I am never going to go anywhere near that speed 80 mph in my s is fast enough, not because it won't go faster more I don't want it too. As Mr Q says its an elderly gent and after 38 years deserves to be treated respectfully.

Demetris, do the 185 tyres look OK on 4-cyl wheel rims? I'm considering upgrading to them myself but wondered if the rims would look too narrow for them.

Hi Dave, although i had my 2000 very briefly with the standard rims, they looked OK in my eyes. I wouldn't like to go over 185 on the standard rims though.

This is how it looked in the first days under my ownership.

I don't think it is the tyre speed rating which causes me to drive no faster than 80 mph Mick, It's the relationship that my fuel tank/bank balance and the speedo have. It's not a positive one. :(

I likes tyres, me. Which is a bit odd, but hey.

My V8 is shod with 205/70 14s -H rated- and they work really well. They're toyo teo plus eco, and cost 70 quid each a bit ago. They're certainly a lot better then the 27 year old avons that were on there.

Edit - after looking as bit seems these might not exist any more :(
