Unleaded - 2000 TC on unleaded

Hi All;

I have aquired a 1971 2000TC which the vendor assured me would run unleaded. Posts in other sections of the forum indicate that only the V8 will do so without modification. There are no receipts in the substantial vehicle history to indicate that head modification has been carried out. How can I verify that my P6 is Ok with unleaded. I will of course chase the vendor for details but any independant comments based on experience will be appreciated. :p

Bilmac,
a 1971 2000TC would have a 10.5 : 1 compression ratio and was designed to run on 5 star fuel.
It would need modifications to the engine to run on unleaded.
Read my article on FUELS, COMBUSTION AND CONSUMPTION in P6 NEWS for April 2003 or a slightly up-dated version on Alimorg's website www.p-six.co.uk or send me your e-mail address by private message and I will e-mail a copy to you.
Hope this helps.
Regards, John.

Thanks John, I received the information which is impressively detailed and will be a valuable source of reference material for all Rover enthusiasts. Your information has probably saved me a lot of time, effort and money.
Very well done and thank you very much indeed.

Leaded fuel has been banned in Canada since 1990. I have suffered no valve recession during that time. While I still had the 2000 TC engine, I had to move the timing closer to TDC to avoid pinking? pinging? on steep hills.

After I rebored the engine on the car (eventually both the 1969 and the 1970 TC) to 2200 standard, I haven't had to worry about pinging. I have been told that the modification reduced the compression. I use 92 or 94 octane successfully.

The trick was to adjust the timing closer to TDC than the book mentioned.
