I'm looking to but a P6 V8 having been without one now for some years. Please refresh my memory, do they run on unleaded fuel ?? - if not what's the altenative solution.
Early V8's have high compression engines so are fussier but despite this, mine runs fine on ordinary unleaded. Have started to use an additive as a precaution and went for one with an octane boost as they were designed for 100 octane but I'm not sure it is worth paying the extra for the boost as it ran fine on neat stuff.
I've already found out that suitable fuels are good grounds for debate!! This is true in other car clubs too.
P6s don't need lead for wear protection but they do need the octane it provides. Detune by 2 degrees to 4 degrees BTDC and use Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate. It'll be fine. Or detune to 0 degrees BTDC and use ordinary unleaded.
Sorry to be a bit slow on the uptake rovermorris, but how do you 'detune' the engine ?
I'm getting a P6B V8 auto in a couple of weeks and was looking around the forum to see if they run on unleaded or not. I currently run a Mondeo (on unleaded) and some older classic Mini's (on Optimax plus millers lead additive).
If you want to set the timing to TDC - 0 degrees.......
Turn the bottom pulley with a socket until the main mark upon it lines up with the pointer on the engine. The engine is then at TDC. (No 1 piston at the very top of its compression stroke).
Take the distributor cap off and place a test lamp between the live side of the points (the only wire) and earth on the car.
Undo the clamp on the dizzy and rotate it back and forth - ONLY A LITTLE - until the light goes out/comes on. Move the dizzy until you are at the point where the light is switching on & off, and flickers as you nudge the rotor arm with your finger.
