I have just got my first rover p6 its a k reg four door with a twin carb. as a rolling restoration project..I am going to fix things for mot nothing major just minor things..but i would like to know can the engine run on unleaded fuel??and will it do damage..I was going to use shell optimax as its the high compression engine..

thank you I have read that site and very helpful.I was going to take the head off and decoke the engine and check the valves.I am now going to get the head converted with hardened seats.

Hi Jay,
If you are going to get the heads done anyway why not try running on unleaded first without the conversion, my dad ran his 1969 triumph trophy for 2 years and 10000 miles on unconverted heads with no additives before it began to loose compression at which point he got it converted by a local engineering firm. Also unless you have access to the machinery and are going to do it yourself shop around and get quotes dad found a huge discrepancy in prices one quote coming in a three times the ammount of the guy yho actually did the work.
Cheers

the valves are a bit sticky the car has been in storage for 10 years and i think the valve seats are corroded and will need lapping in.I am going to check to see if they have been done before..I already have access to a engineering place a friend of mine will do it for just the price of parts and a favour(drink)

jus to let you know..I removed the head and the valves were very pitted along with the valve seats. So I went ahead and got valve seat inserts fitted for unleaded fuel along with some valves.( a friend of mine done the engineering)I have also got the head back on the car and it runs very well a lot better that before.Still need a few bits before mot but only minor bits..

Hello Jay,
would be interesting to hear if you have any "pinking" or will you use an additive to reduce that possibility? Or, have you reduced the compression ration in some way?
Regards, John.

hope not.I plan to use shell optimax or similar...i got a shell garage nearby that is resonably cheap..If it does pink I will retard the ignition or add a additive.
