Certainly JC!

I would reccomend Duckhams Classic 20/50. This oil has served me well for years.

On the oil filter front, make sure that you do get a filter for a P6 V8. A lot of motor factors these days will try and sell you one for a SD1, but that will not fit, as the threads are different.

Can't remember how much oil the V8 holds, but you will need to buy 2 full cans of the stuff - 1 ain't enough!

A quick tip- run the engine up nice and hot, and then drain the engine oil. But remember to wear gloves, and don't scald yourself! Before changing the oil filter, replace the drain plug, and fill the engine with oil first. I normally half fill the new oil filter with oil before hand, and then change the oil filter last. The object of the excercise is to give the oil pump as little chance as possible to drain. If they do, they can be a swine to get to pull oil up again, and the worse case scenario is having to strip the oil pump, and pack the gears with grease! I've never had this problem though.
Some people like to manually prime the oil pump, after changing the filter, by removing the distributor, and turning the oil pump driveshaft with a special tool. I've never done this though.

Martin tells me he bought two oil filters for an MGB GT V8.
Now, I believe the front cover is the same as the P6. The water pump is certainly identical.
BGT V8 came into production 73 and was phased out in 76.
Fingers crossed its the right one.

Only cost £3 each so not really a problem if they have to go back.

Yep, Richards spot on with a decent 20W-50. And the Duckhams is a good'un!.
Sump capacity is 5.0 Litres including a new filter.

For cross-referencing purposes the Unipart oil filter number used to be GFE 145. (I have heard this has since changed to GFE 481 but you may want to check that).

I got a v8 filter from my local factor last year.

It was the wrong thread so they cross referd it, there was a load of yanks but I think the one I got was from a diesel astra or something like that.

20/50 oil; even the cheap brans will be fine but change them at 3,000 (more frequent).

filter from late v8 (rang rover/sd1) are 3/4 UNF, P6 filter thread is 13/16 UNF (you sometimes see the thread stamped on the filter so a shufty in halfords opening up boxes will sort you out.

don't drain oil and remove filter at tsaem time since this can rain the oil pump. I drain the oil, refill it, run the engine then remove the filter - it helps to fill up the filter with oil before screwing it on.
