V8 PUMP NUTS ! - Priming oil pump

aaaah ! Unfortunately my V8 needs the oil pump primed to get any pressure, but I cannot find a way to open the pump. I have tried all manner of bits and sockets, including I read somewhere about a 8mm 12-point spanner, but was not successful. Could someone tell me the spec. of the correct tool to open pump. if I still had enough hair I would be pulling it out.

If not, does priming, by removing distibutor, etc work ? If so are then any pitfalls, apart from losing timing ?

Thanks in anticipation.

I used the electric drill down the dizzy drive on my MGB V8 without problems and have done the same with other GM V8s in the States. This is actually the technique that GM recommend following an engine rebuild so there sould be no problems at all. If you look on a Buick or Oldsmobile website you should find instructions on not loosing the timing as well.

Cardinal,
I favour the method that I have used several times, that of removing the pump cover with an offset ring spanner of the right size (will check size in garage later this morning!) and packing the pump with vaseline.
Replace cover and start engine, oil displaces vaseline and continues to pump around engine, vaseline "burns off" Job done!
It is a fiddly job so the electric drill sounds easier, tho' I've never tried this method.
Best of luck.

just to add, fill up oil fillter as high as possible prior to assembly ...also correct priming tool used via a drill is available from rimmer brothers under V8 section

Cardinal,
sorry for the delay on this but have now found the correct spanner!
It's a Heyco offset ring spanner with1/4" AF on one end and 5/16" AF on the other. I'm pretty sure (99.9%) that the 5/16" AF is the size I used.
Hope this helps.
Regards, John.

if you can remove the bottom plate, then thatwould be simplest and the use petroleum jelly (cheaper version of vaeline you ccan buy from Boots).

then/or make up a tool like this; bits of steel tube welded onto a m8 bolts, fit into a cordless drill and give it a whizz.

you are welcome to borrow my tool if you want - Rimmer Bros. sell them for £ 20 .... but it is for the later type of drive (SD1 not P6)
